Help Identifying Date/Info Of Sheepskin Flight Jacket Please

I have another piece i'd like some help with please. Men's aviator jacket in ginger? Sheepskin. Simply sized as L. It's in quite bad shape. It was my fathers then my brothers.

I remember my brother wearing it in the 90s. He worn it soooo much, as you can see from the broken zipper at the front and obvious wear to it. He found it while having a clear out and offered it to me. I can't help a good little research project!

I can't make out the label in it's entirety. I know it says 'Made by craftsmen in Somerset England' And i'm guessing the label name reads something like 'Northsky' ???.

I checked the label to see where the two lines (next to the brand) go, they both come off the top of the label in their straight lines. I enhanced the picture as best I could but that's the best I can get it. Hoping someone recognizes it or perhaps the design on the zipper (same two triangle detail on reverse of zipper pull).

It's certainly vintage but which decade? I doubt it's a genuine WW2 airforce one as there is no label to indicate that. I think it's pre 1970s because of the styling on the label but i'm just not sure. Help much appreciated.

Hi,

It is not WW2, the ref number is I think a style number.

Tanns went into receivership in 1985 along with their holding company EWC French according to a small newspaper article I found.

It is possible Tanns survived for a while afterwards, up to the 1990s.

The brand label, there appears to be two different types, white background, yellow print or a more gold colour type.

Tanns produced decent products but may not be as old as other sheepskin product manufactures, I can't find a start up date.

From the care label, your jacket is 70s I think and makes sense if first your Father then older Brother wore it, it has been well worn and loved.

The zip can be resewn if all there or replaced, I think it a number 10, you should be able to match the correct colour zip and may be more cost effective to have one side done only.

Your Jacket appears it could do with a good, non chemical leather feed.

It is vintage but not old vintage.

Tanns Jackets are available on auction sites but in better condition.

That's amazing info, you know, I didn't even think to look up Tanns because I thought it was just referring to a process of tanning the leather! I'm off to do more research, thank you!

Hi Gem-Gem, you will do better then I, as with all research I just happened across the newspaper article after a fair amount of reading.

I found Tanns mentioned in a couple of other articles but only in the context of the failing Sheepskin Product industry of the 80s.

There has been a revival but not nearly as big as yesterday years. :)

Edit, useless info, apparently on average it takes two million sheep skins to make three hundred thousand sheepskin coats.

That bomber style with the low banded waist was MEGA popular in the mid 80s, I think early 80s is right on the nose.

Thank you so much, so helpful.

Yes I really can see 80s styling in it now you come to mention it. I think the style of the label writing was throwing me a bit but of course there were repo's even in the 80s so the writing could be stylised to emulate an earlier time. I also found a 70s sheepskin coat by Tanns advertised the 70s and the style on the label was completely different, much more bubble style, it looked quite 60s/70s to me. The 80s style one I found though had the same label and the yellow writing was clearer but still difficult to read. It possibly says 'Naturaly', with one L!
