Help ID'ing sheer fabric on 1930s nightgown & peignoir set

Hi all - I'm hoping someone can help me identify the fabric on this 1930s lingerie set.
The fabric is lightweight sheer with slight pucker that creates subtle checks when looking closely.
It reminds me slightly of chiffon but not as whispy. I looked at the fabric resource under sheer fabrics and puckered fabrics and just can't seem to come to a positive id.

Does anyone identify this?

Beautiful set!! It looks an awful lot like a light, gauzy "waffle weave" to me, but I am no expert.

Thank you Robin! Is there a gauzy 'waffle weave' that is silk? It just doesn't have that starchy cotton feel - more of a silk feel to me.
