Hi all, I purchased this dress and bolero under the impression that it was a 1970s Vicky Vaughn (it was advertised as such) however, there are things about it that confuse me. The construction is not typical of a 1970s piece - there are no serge seams in the dress at all, although there seems to be in bolero but only where the black fabric is attached. There is a side metal zipper and the label (Vicky Vaughn) does not seem right, it seems to be an older label (from the late 40s/early 50s) but it is a) black, not red and b) printed, not woven. The fabric is cotton waffle pique. Could it be possible that some has taken an older dress and totally altered it? I'm pretty confused .. could anyone provide any insight please? Thanks!
I think it's 1950s... like 1956-7 range... Debbie Reynolds "Tammy era" as I call it. That's my guess.
It looks to me like a '50s dress that has been sized up and altered - so the dress has been taken apart by a home sewer and added black panels to the middle (to increase the size, and adjusted the gathers of the bodice and skirt) and to the hem (to increase the length) and then to the bolero too. But that looks like a lot of work. Do you have any pics of the inside of the bolero? Or the underside of the hem where the black joins the print? You're right: bits of the construction are commercially made '50s and bits of it are enthusiastic home sewer. Someone loved this set and worked hard to make it work for them.
