Help with pricing two dresses

Hello Everyone. I am new to the board but I have been looking around this site for quite awhile and have learned a few things. Recently I acquired these two dresses, Ceil Chapman and Claire McCardell, both in near excellent condition. Can anyone tell me what they are worth if I decided to sell them. Thanks Much

Your dresses are fabulous. I don't think anyone with the VFG is allowed to give you a value on this thread, but maybe someone with more experience than me, can provide you with suggestions of where you can go for pricing help.

Thanks Alice for the compliment and letting me know what the rule is because I don't want to break any.

I forgot to say that I checked out your etsy shop EndlessAlley and you have got some pretty fabulous everything yourself.

Hi Svelte,

Welcome to the Forums and thank you for showing us your GORGEOUS dresses. The best way for you to figure out how to price them is to do searches for comparables in VFG member's shops, on eBay in closed auctions, and at auction houses. I noticed you said, "if I decide to sell them" - so perhaps you'll keep them and wear them. I would!

Actually, unless things have changed recently at Amazon, they don't sell vintage clothing. EBay can sometimes be helpful to look at prices other sellers are asking, but some vintage sellers set unrealistic BINs with the hopes that someone will come along who wants it badly and also thinking they have lots of negotiating room. You also have to factor in whether the style and condition of theirs is fairly similar to yours.

Closed eBay listings are more realistic, but you can only go 2 weeks back unless you pay to subscribe to something like Worthpoint. But beware of the trendy sellers with such a following of enthusiastic social network fans that they can sell raw hem 80s secretary dresses for hundreds that most of us couldn't get $15 for.

Maggie, good advice! I've found the same thing to be true on eBay. I have occasionally emailed a seller on Etsy for information on how much an item has sold for. I'd say about one in four are willing to share a sales price. I've also looked at auction house sales to help with pricing.
