How to measure dolman style sleeved dresses

Hi all

How would you get a armpit to armpit and waist measurement for this type of dress? I measured the waist and it came to 32" but when I tried it on (26" waist) it was a little sung around the waist so I'm confused!

Might sound silly but did you measure the narrowest part of the waist? Also did you measure the front (seam to seam) and double it or did you also measure the back (seam to seam) and add it? Sometimes the seams and not centred. Also for non stretch fabrics (especially thick and starchy ones) you need to consider ease.
