How to stand out in a 40s dress

My mom & I went to the opera yesterday. She had invited me, since one of my all-time favorites, the rare "La Fanciulla del West" by Puccini was on. It's the first time actually that I've seen the same opera the 2nd time around (the first time being in October '08 in Montreal), which means quite a lot for me.

We've been totally snowed it, yesterday the whole city was just one big white-out, so no chance to wear the long silk dress I'd wanted to wear, as I had get across the city by tram. So, it was time for my "newest" 40s dress. I guess it's cotton velvet, and there's quite a bit of fading, especially on one sleeve (it might have hung on a rack in a shop for some time I guess), so it didn't cost a lot. However, apart from the fading, it is in tip top condition, no other issues, and the shape is just too gorgeous! And since almost everybody else seemed to be dressed in black... it stood totally out. Well, there were two relatively long intervals, so I had ample time to parade it all around :hysterical:.

My mom gave the dress clip - she had wanted to sell it, but I knew it would be perfect for this. The bag is vintage too, by "After 5". It's my favorite evening bag.

There are no labels in the dress, and there's also a fair amount of hand sewing on it. Side metal zip. I guess it was home made. It fits me as if it had been made for me, and it just shows what I love about the 40s - incredible tailoring. Here's a look at it's back:

Let's just say, that dress does incredible things to my backside :hysterical:. Oh well, all else too. It's just one of the most figure-flattering dresses I've ever worn.

Karin -

The dress is lovely and you look wonderful in it. I've never seen "The Girl of the Golden West" (As it's called in the US) - lucky you - except for the white-out part!

You look marvelous! It's such a treat to find vintage that fits well.
As for the fade issues, a cotton velvet dress like that would take well to re-dying if you were up to the task.

Thanks everybody!

@Amber - I can live with the fading... and take care not to have it hanging outside my closet too much. And I think I fear ruining it too much, as that I would try to dye it :duh:.

@Linn - Fanciulla is not very well known - at least here in Europe, but it's all over the place right now because the 100th anniversary of its première at the Met was this month. It's beautiful. A story with a lot of action - and a happy ending, no less! And the music is incredible :headbang:. People say that there are no popular melodies in it as in other Puccini operas, when in fact there is so much beautiful music in it. It's just that is a "whole" - melodies and themes reappear throughout, the music isn't just there, it actually seems to drive the story. I guess in a way it's very modern. Different at least. I'm not an opera specialist, I just like beautiful music. I sat on the edge of my seat throughout the first time I saw it. Totally fascinated. I had no idea what to expect then. I had never even heard of this opera before then.

You look gorgeous in that dress. It really becomes you. I would try it also with nude stockings and a slightly higher heel, maybe in gold.
