Identification of River Phoenix's red barn jacket from My Own Private Idaho.

The jacket is a 50's canvas hunting jacket that was dyed rust red you can see in movie stills of River Phoenix wearing the jacket the true color on the reverse side of the jacket. It is posssibly a red head bone dry or black sheep I am postive that is the brand. I have a about 20 of them kind of jackets but in the khaki original color.

Looks like a 1940s or 1950s duck canvas waxed hunting jacket by Duxbak (as Jon mentioned). Duxbak is one maker -- there are many different makers and similar styles. I have even seen one from the 1950s made by Sears and you can find those by looking up JC Higgins. J.Barbour & Sons is the still around and have made those waxed styles for years. Bushmaster is another maker. Ones with corduroy at the shoulder are also cool. They are usually more of the light brown variety (think that Carhartt color), but that doesn't mean they didn't make that color at that time (or that it might have been dyed or been rewaxed incorrectly to get that redish color).
Waxing canvas has been done since the mid-1500's for sailors to stay dry and became common in the 193os in clothing making.

As mentioned by Jon it's a Dryback jacket. Reversible, very rare.

The search is over all! As Jon mentioned previously the jacket is a Dryback duck hunting jacket. It's very rare, but I assure you it was not dyed red, it was a specific jacket that was reversible. I bought one that was a slightly older version than the one in the film, but it is 100% without a doubt the jacket. Pics of mine below.
