It's all Greek to me!

It\'s all Greek to me!

I've recently come across these hats and wonder if you've ever come across anything similar in your travels. These were sent to me with a batch of vintage clothing so I wasn't expecting them and I'm keen to know more. I'm getting a distinct 50's or 60's vibe from them but I've not been able to find anything remotely like them in the vintage books I have.

This first one is rather special I think. It's made from real Persian lamb wool. The flaps on the top reveal a leathery/suede backing. As you can see, there's fabric inside the hat which is secured with a ribbon fastener, presumably to keep the hat snugly on the head. Have you ever seen a style of hat like this I wonder? The label inside is Greek.

The label inside this shows 'ATHENS FUR SALES' T Galistinos. These were worn in the 50's I know but is there a specific name. It looks a little strange on my mannequin I know. It's a little mis-shapen. Again, I think it's made from real Persian Lamb fur/wool.

This fluffy, puffy, pink hat has no label at all. Can anyone confirm a style or date? Again, I'm thinking 50's or possibly 60's.

All of them are small but do fit quite nicely on the pea-sized head of my mannequin, Stella. Don't tell her I said that!

Any hat lovers out there? If you've got anything remotely like these in your hat collection I'd love to see! :xmas3:

Just simply FABULOUS...you would think a Matador from Spain wore them...LOL!!! (not the pink one!!!). SSHHHHHH...will keep it on the downlow for Stella and her PeaHead!

Can not wait to see what others think about the hats!!!

Thanks for posting!

love them, Louise~ i'm actually getting more of an earlier vibe frm the 1st one/perhaps even a traditional folk hat since its so special

but all my resource books are at home, so can't really confirm/look today. getttin more of a 60s thing from the 2nd and the pink ones ~

Thanks Mary. :) Yes, I thought the first one was almost like a Cossack style hat - perhaps not as tall. It does have that folksy look about it. Thanks for your input.

Are you sure the first one isn't Russian rather than Greek? I have a couple of hats similar that came from a milatary family who had bee in Russia.

Hi Candy. It could be Russian but I'm sure the lettering inside the hat is Greek. :clueless: Have you got any photos of yours. I'd love to see them. :xmas3:

Hi Laura :hiya: There is some additional lettering underneath the fury animal. :) It's too awkward to photograph at the moment so I'll wait until Simon gets home and see if he can help. Again, the same kind of lettering as shown in the first set of photos. I'm only assuming it's in Greek since it arrived with the other weirdly shaped piece which has 'Athens' on the label.

I'll be back with another label photo later. Thanks for your input as always. :spin:

Here's a photo of the bottom section of the label. It's quite faded in the middle. Apologies for the poor quality. I'll try and take one in daylight for tomorrow. Any ideas about the origins of the first hat? Is this Russian lettering? :)

Just bumping this up. Additional label photo attached above. Could the first hat be Russian? Has anyone got anything similar in their vintage stash?

Louise, when I needed help with a Latvian silver hallmark, I popped right into the Russian Team's main thread on Etsy and asked for help. My few Cyrillic reading skills are long, long gone, and they were very helpful with the translation -- especially the two who sent me private convos with assistance.

Here is the thread, and you can just pop right in and ask ...

Beth, I think the logo is a little furry type creature -- perhaps a mink or critter in the weasel family. :)

The first Persian Lamb toque style hat is probably late 1950's /early 60's and the pink 'bucket' style hat is early 1960's. The crescent style hat I would say is from the 1950's.

What an unusual - and international! - selection of hats!

I have a similar one to the divine pink number in black velveteen, with the same kind of 'waisted' shape with a tie. Much less glam than yours :)

Congratulations on a very interesting haul! :drinkingtoast:
