I\'ve been on a hat binge

I'm not kidding. I've been buying lots of great hats, most for my own collection, but some I'll be selling. I'm partly showing then off, and I also have some important questions I need answers ro. I'm just starting to really love hats, and I've so many questions.

Hat #1

At times I'm convinced that this hat is 50s, and then at others it seems to be earlier. The only label reads "adjustable". Any thoughts?

20s, right? Silk lining. The label reads "Efirds' the Souths' Finest Store, Charlotte." There was an Efirds' in Asheville. I can't remember it, but I can remember my mother talking about how swanky it was.

Is this 20s? It's made from a heavy satiny twill, and it feels like rayon. It's not lined, but it could have been. There is a wire that shapes the little brim.

I thought it was 30s when I spotted this one, but it's 50s, I think. It's not lined, and the label is vey 50s looking. The camilla is made from leather.

This one is very weird. It is a bit flexible, but it's quite stiff. It's very soft and fuzzy. Part of the lining is missing, and there is evidence that there were some feathers to the right of the front bow.

I know Queenie had some hats similar to this one a while back. What is this style called? Early 40s? And can anyone ID the fur. The bow and braided straps are made from felt.

Lizzie I am terrible at dating hats but they sound right on to me. That top one almost looks like a variation of the pancake hat. Never seen one before with the <i> pleats?? </i>

They are all absolutely wonderful!

Lizzie, the only one I'm sure on is the second 20s cloche one, will be curious to see how the guys that 'know' hats concur with your
dates.

That's a Nice group Lizzie - let's see:

#1 - 50s I think - nice crown
#2 1920s - yep - summer hat
#3 1960s - ( it the interlining) I sell these as 1960s with 1920s style
#4 - 50s, and I love leather flowers
#5 - a good find - looks like that fuzzy beaver felt- somewhere in 1900 - 1910- and no need to list it, just send it on to me
#6 - 40s looks good to me
#7 - very nifty late 30s , early 40s doll or percher hat. Jonathan has a theory that the wider back bands were from the 30s. I have done well with these lately, just be sure to put WW2 or Wartime 40s Doll Hat in the title.

Those are all great hats!
#1 is probably mid 1940s. The open backs were really popular then - as well as than clam shell kind of look.
#2 & 3 are great looking 20s!
Love all those cute shaped 30-40s numbers too.

But Hat #5 looks like the winner of age! From what I can see in the small photos its a victorian sheered beaver! The interior is absolutely right. These are great collectible hats to us Victorian lovers. She looks in pretty good condition too. Light vacuming, tooth brushes on the velvet ribbons and it'll be a killer! If you auction her....oh please do let me know!
 
I concur with Hollis on all of them but #1, which I think is 1945ish, just at the end of the war -- it should be worn on the back of the head. And the Edwardian hat is 1903 - 1906, the brim is too big for pre 1903, and the brim is too scultped-curvy for post 1906. My theory for the width of the hat bands seems to hold true most of the time. When the loop at the back of the doll hats is wide, it seems to fit in pre 1942, and when its a little elastic band, it tends to be later. I am sure there are exceptions to the rules, but its a general rule of thumb.
 
Although I'm not a major hat expert, I agree that #1 is earlier than 50's. I think Jonathan is right on about it.
Number 4 (I think it's number 4..with the leather camelia) looks just like a Schiap my mom had from the late 50's-early early 60's.
I ADORE hats and have terrible luck finding them. All of the older hats I have came from my mom's collection. She was a hat fiend and would spend lots of $$$ on hats even if she had to make her own clothes.

Such a lovely lot of hats - and most in my favorite color too! ;)

My favorite of the lot, not surprisingly, is hat #5. Definately Victorian/Edwardian era. I love the large brim of that hat along with the velvet bows. So romantic and dramatic! Great find!

Sorry I'm not much of a hat expert and good luck selling/collecting!

#3. I had my doubts about this one from the beginning, and I'm not even sure why.

Hollis, can you tell me more about how you could tell from the underlining? Is it the age of that meshy stuff they used?

#4. Joey, I'm glad this brought back good memories for you. This is a really fantastic hat. Your mother had great taste!

#5. I', still so surprised that this hat is so old. For some reason I was thinking late 30s; kind of a Gone with the Wind look. It is likely that I'll sell this one, as it is so far out of the range of what I collect.

#7. Look for this one in my Babylon Mall store this fall!

Lizzie, that interlining is very plastic in feel - I can't remember it's actual name, maybe Miracle cloth? Anyway, it's one of the plastic based wonder interfacings that came out in the 50s and 60s. In the 20s, you would be more likely to see buckram, which is also a mesh, but was a cotton fiber that is very heavily starched. Buckram comes in a variety of weights.

Steph, isn't that a fun hat? Actually, it says "The Forecast" so it must be a weather hat.:P

You are right, Hollis, it does feel a bit plasticy.
