Jay Herbert California - 1950s?

My dress form is a bit too small for this dress. Dress was made for a much "bustier" figure. I'm thinking this party dress with it's more "hour glass" cut, pinked seams in the lining, lack of union label and metal zipper is from the '50s. If it is from the 1950s, would it be appropriate to wear a petticoat under a dress like this?

Thank you for your help.

Voice of dissent... I think its early 60s and I don't think it would have been worn with a crinoline underneath (Janie Bryant is a little crinoline happy on Mad Men - a lot of those dresses were worn with a half slip, not a crinoline...)

Thanks everyone for your comments. I was thinking late '50s because of the pinked seams - will revise that!
Also I know there's a link here somewhere that explains petticoat vs crinoline...need to look that up. And Julie I loved your comment.... "The dress is meant to flow and swish, not to pouf". Perfect!

I have almost exactly the same dress I posted a little while back *here* but with long sleeves and an ostrich feather trim to the bottom hem, also 1960's, by Sutin of Paris. It has the same lining/sheer outer and fastening at the back though, the top is quite fitted but the skirt hangs loose in a very nice floaty way. It wouldn't do this with anything underneath. One of my favourites.

Great Link Julie!

I love the coats that he has ending each run. Although I can't help but thinking that there should be some sort of pretty lining in there instead of seeing the back of the print. I don't suppose it would float the same if he did though. Love that floor length strapless floral dress in the pinks and white; so pretty!!

So cute. Didn't expect him to come out at the end in Jeans and a T-shirt. That's a California boy for ya! I don't usually pay much attention to new fashion, but this was really fun to watch. I had to break it into 3 segments due to my schedule today. I really liked most of what he designed, some things not so much, but most dresses I liked at least somewhat, and some I adored. It was interesting to see the 80's structural elements coming back around; I also saw 60's, 50's and 30's elements as well as some that had a splash or renaissance feel as well.

And EndlessAlley, so sorry for hijacking your thread with these comments of mine.

Makes me proud to be a Pepperdine alumna, not that fashion design is offered there, but still.
He seems so hard-working, and shy too. I thought his show was by far the best of the week, and
simply to be in the room with those fabulous designs and gorgeous textiles, made me very happy!

Thank you for allowing us to veer off topic, from your pretty Jay Herbert California dress.
(I really needed a fashion escape, from insurance adjusters and auto body shop guys today.)
