Lanvin Label Numbers

Hello all!

I've searched and searched but I have found no conclusive answer, so I come to you!

Does anyone here know what the printed numbers on the edge of vintage Lanvin labels mean? Particularly in 70s and 80s pieces. Some Lanvin labels of these eras have these numbers, others don't.

I see many sellers mentioning that the label is numbered, as if it's a selling point, but what does it actually mean?

Many thanks in advance!

Gorgeous print, Ould we see a clear picture of the whole garment?

Sure! It's a late 70s / early 80s silk number.

But it's just an example of the printed numbers on the label. I have other pieces from the early to mid 70s also with these printed numbers.

I was under the impression that these numbers indicate it’s a couture outfit- please anyone correct me if I am wrong.

It's the registration number for the design. So the design is registered at Lanvin and they would be able to trace who designed it, when, for what collection, and how many were sold in that design. It isn't just for couture - you also see it on French boutique lines. It's a French thing and was part of the registration of designs to stop counterfeits. I think they start in about 1920. However, you will never get anyone at Lanvin to help you decipher the numaber. They may have an archivist but unless you know someone there, your emails will go unanswered.

I'm on the same page as Jonathan. The one thing it can tell you if you have others is which designs are older.

When I wrote the person I know at Chanel, she offered to register the suits which I asked about, particularly if I were interested in loaning them for exhibitions. At YSL, I know someone but have gotten no help with dating.

Hello Guys, good morning.

Is this Authentic? What is that D label?

This label looks familiar?

have you seen labels like this?
Sorry for the confusion. Donna is referring to our forum rules, found in our Public Information Center: Welcome - Please Read First thread.

Appraisals, authentications, and valuations are really beyond the scope of any online venue, including ours. We are an all-volunteer organization, and we have a lot of very smart members and guests here, but we do try to stick to our limits.

Our educational Label Resource has an extensive set of Lanvin labels that date between 1915 and about 2000. Your label matches one from Augusta Auctions that they dated to 1987. That would suggest they had provenance for their dress. That's not a guarantee that your jacket dates to the same year, but mid-to-late 80s is probably close.

Sometimes guests ask questions about items that are frequently "knocked off", and have closeup details that strongly suggest something is not right. FWIW I haven't heard about fake 80s Lanvin's floating around out there. If you would like to add some detail photos to our original thread, you may be able to get more feedback and opinions.

Thank you so much. Yes, I read those, I think was also my mistake not to ask in proper way if you have seen that label and the period. Thank you so much for such an amazing response. Regards
