MY FAVORITE THINGS - A Tribute to the Costumes of The Sound of Music, Designed by Dorothy Jeakins This year marks the 50th anniversary of the film, The Sound of Music (released in 1965; music by Rodgers and Hammerstein). Set in Austria on the eve of the Anschluss (the annexation of Austria by Germany in 1938), the beloved classic musical film is based on Maria von Trapp’s 1949 book, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, wherein, she takes a job as a governess while deciding whether or not to become a nun. She falls in love with the children in her charge, and eventually, their widowed father, Captain von Trapp. So, "Let's start at the very beginning (a very good place to start). . ." with traditional Trachten clothing, dirndls, glamorous gowns a la the Baroness Schraeder, men's formal evening wear, children's play clothes, nightshirts, sleepwear, 1930s daywear, 1930s wedding dresses, ladies suits, heeled slippers and 1930s accessories, hats and jewelry. And let's not forget some of our "favorite things" mentioned in the song: kittens, ponies, mittens, rose prints, bells, and snowflake prints!
