My modern 1950s suit

A good year ago I was asking around here for a pattern for a 1950s jacket, because my first vintage 1950s jacket had a lot of holes and I didn't know how long it was still going to be holding up. Well, it's still there, and I have since bought so many more jackets that I can easily switch around between them.

Anyway, I finally bought a vintage McCall's pattern from ebay and Vintage Vogue pattern from VFG member Secondlooks.

In the end, I decided on the McCall's pattern and later decided to make the whole suit. Last January, I bought the fabric at the legendary Viennese fabric store Komolka... and here it finally is!

My mom made the jacket, and I made the skirt. I'm not half as experienced at sewing as she is, but she thinks as a next thing, I should make a jacket myself. Well, maybe I'll give that Vintage Vogue pattern a try - it looks not quite as complicated as this one... :hysterical:. Plus it looks delicious too. Mom went all the way, and even made bound button holes :jawdrop:. And of course there's a delicious satin lining in the jacket as well.

One concession to modern times was that I lined the skirt too - of course originally it wasn't lined. Also, I made it a bit shorter. Just the same length as my original early 50s suit, so it just covers the knees and that's it. According to the pattern, the skirt would have been quite a bit longer, and it would certainly have been a true wiggle skirt, but that's not overly practical for every day wear. Plus, I have come to really like this length - I find it quite attractive. In fact, this skirt is almost the same cut as the vintage one, and certainly the same shape and width. I'm also thinking of making just the skirt a second time, but in black. Just a basic skirt that can be worn with anything.

Thanks everybody! I'm going to try to get someone to take a pic of me in it.

I didn't ask for bound button holes, but I guess mom saw all my vintage jacket with bound ones, and thought she'd go all the way :headbang: .

Amber, I wish I could "hire" her a bit more myself :hysterical:. She's ever so busy... The other Saturday she came here she went to the fabric store (the best one this city has happens to be in my part of it) to buy some fabric for a skirt - she arrived here with three fabrics - one more for a dress and one for a winter coat ;).
