No passport no border crossing, as of today...

I totally forgot about this since it was threatened 3 or 4 years ago and kept being delayed.... Anyway, if you want to cross the US border in or out of Canada you now need a passport. Yup, we Canucks just keep flooding across the border to take American fruit picking and domestic service jobs... and we also help escort terrorists through U.S. customs... thank god a little blue book with a tiny black and white photo will stop those problems! (oops - too rife with sarcasm?) As someone pointed out, its like hitting a gnat with a baseball bat.

This is SO ridiculous! When I lived in western NY, we used to take weekend trips to Canada a few times a year. As did many people. This will, I'm sure, reduce cross-border tourism. Who the hell is going to get a passport so they can take their kids to see Niagara Falls? We all have passports, but if we didn't already, I'm not sure I'd want to incur the fees (it's not cheap to get passports for an entire family) or that I'd even know enough to plan far enough ahead of time--it takes weeks & weeks to get them. Gonna be a lot of folks changing plans when they don't get their passports in time to cross the border this summer, or when they find out too late they need them.

Another case of the U.S. government "making us safer." From whom? Weekend shoppers? Tourists? Football fans? Cigarette smugglers? Those of us who want a good Canadian beer (we always used to bring back a case or two of beer--declared--that you can't get, or is hard to find in the U.S.)?

Meanwhile, cargo ships are docking in our ports and unloadeing containers that are not being inspected. And who knows what-all those contain? Chemical weapons? Explosives?

Bah, humbug...

I'm embarassed to say I don't even have a passport. It's been on my to-do list for YEARS. I might need to get my ass in gear now that it means I can't go anywhere without one!

I've gotten behind a few passport applying folks at the PO before, and I was shocked at the price. Something in the couple hundred dollar area? And a month and a half or so average to deliver?
I'm pretty well landlocked, but I can understand those close by wanting to hop and skip around the general neighborhood.

I suppose it comes down to the fact that a few asshats spoil it for everyone. I can site a few other cases, I'm sure we all can!

I've always wanted to get one, just in case we go all Handmaidens Tale in the US, but they are not cheap. I keep telling my hubby we need to at least get one for our son...just in case.

I keep forgetting--mine expires June 16th this month.....ugh, ugh, ugh

I renewed earlier this year and it took less than 2 weeks to receive. You can print the renewal form online and mail it in.

I wish polititians would do something that mattered. Its all rather embarassing. All they do is talk and point fingers and provide fodder for Fox News.....

you can get a passport card, that allows crossing of land borders, for $40....sheesh

Sure come to the US get mediocre healthcare and pay a fortune if you are not insure or get jerked around if you are.

I know seniors here go to Canada for their medications and that is a ten hour drive from here.

My husband has just started to rant about securing borders just to annnoy me... I wish he would find a job!LOL

I had no idea that you could travel so easily between the two countries - perhaps because Australia is an island but we need a passport to go anywhere - I always imagined that it was the same for every country. Oh, wait, I think that there were relaxed rules for travel between Australia and New Zealand which perhaps explains why there are so many Kiwis over here.

I'm about one hour from the Canadian border. In Vermont we can get an "enhanced" license that has a radio chip and is scanned at the border.

It's only $15 more than the regular license - however .... our motor vehicle place is famous for long lines. I am not a patient person when it comes to being served !!! I also run a business and do my best to make sure nobody else is waiting unnecessarily to be helped. Hmmm - perhaps this could be done through the mail.

"We have passports but the worst is that the Canadian passport is only valid for 5 years, which is another ridiculous thing. Most countries passports are valid for 10 years."

A 10 year passport is supposed to come out in 2011 MJ. In fact, I think I read somewhere they may even be available now. ???

"Well, maybe we're afraid of those FRENCH Canadians. I hear they don't even speak English."

:hysterical:

Careful, Maryalice - I'm married to one!

Now when we return from NY to enter in Quebec, we not only pass through Canadian Customs, but must first pass through a newly set up US Customs spitting distance from the Canadian Customs before we can enter back into our own country. ???!!!

I kid you not. It was set up the last time I came back in last year. They've beefed security up there quite a bit and they now have what looks almost like an airplane hanger for semi-trailers to pass through an x-ray scanner.
