My grandmother used to hook scatter rugs from scratch. We had wool mills in my area when I was growing up and she would buy remnants. First she would wash the wool then cut it in strips. I know she dyed the wool but I can't remember if she did it before or after cutting the strips. Then she would trace her pattern on the burlap background (always floral). At night she would sit in the kitchen and work on the rug. Sometimes my Mom would help. They were beautiful rugs when finished. Now when I see hand hooked rugs it reminds me of my grandmother.
