Plastic Jewelry
These days plastic gets a bad rap—even the word itself signifies two things: cheap and fake. Replacing ivory and other expensive natural materials with early forms of plastic began in the mid-19th century and really became popular during the Great Depression. Plastic buttons, jewelry, and accessories continue to flourish—its unique colors, pliability, and affordability make it a very desirable material for costume jewelry. Acrylic, Lucite, Bakelite, Catalin, Celluloid, Perspex, Resin, and Galalith—by any name there’s no doubt that plastic is fantastic!
