I have one further question/comment about this dress and zipper. The patent trademark info given above calls the 1946 patent: SLIDE FASTENERS INCLUDING SLIDE FASTENERS MADE FROM NYLON PLASTIC.
Plastic and nylon are not the same material. I have been assuming that the nylon zippers produced by Waldes in 1946 look like the nylon zippers we are used to seeing and am wondering if the plastic zipper and this dress was produced earlier - maybe in 1946 right before the nylon zippers were first used??
Melanie wrote above" Waldes manufactured plastic zips during the war due to shortages of metal. Consumers were unhappy with those zips. They cracked and melted easily.
Waldes wanted to find a plastic that was more practical & durable during use and cleaning.
Company introduced nylon zipper in 1946.
In 1949 George Waldes states his company is shipping 1 million nylon zippers per month. Also says they had introduced a type cover zip version in nylon.
But this zipper is plastic - not nylon - I'm confused!
