Pretty red coat - looks like 50s, but too short

The lining is crepe, probably rayon, the material is velveteen, I think. The lining is so nicely tailored, it looks professionally made, not homemade, but there is no label.

How old do you think it is?
 
It doesn't look too short to me -- of course it also depends on how tall the woman was since they often measured hemlines from the ground at the time as in 18 inches from the ground, rather than 5 inches below the knee. It was in the late 50s when they started measuring from the knee more often than the ground, probably because the length of the skirt or coat in relation to the knee was more important for the silhouette as the hemline came closer to the knee. It looks early - mid 50s to me THere were some quite short lengths in 1954ish, the hemline dropped again after 1954 until 1958 when they started going back up.

Looks 50's to me too! and really pretty I like that style it has a nice cut to it!

Now a question, if you wore a full skirt and crinoline is this the type of coat you would wear? The bottom is nice and full. So I wonder how it would look if you showed it with a crinoline so people got the idea of how they could wear it with thier full skirts.
 
It is gorgeous! I thought I'd save my non-helpful drooling, when first viewing it, earlier, but GAWD I love it. I wish I could buy a dressy coat, right now; I'd be all over this. It is sooo 'reading' like cotton or silk velvet, too. Where's the jealous emoticon when you need it? :)

Because its velveteen, its definately dressy and I think would be the sort of coat one would wear over a cocktail or theatre dress, with a full skirt... and probably a hat too. WOuld look gorgeous over grey silk or pink taffeta, and black or white...
 
You know, I was watching the movie, The Talented Mr. Ripley, last night and one of the minor characters wore a coat of this style (minus the big round button, which is so very 50s). The movie was supposedly taking place in the 30s. This cut must have been popular for ages.
 
What Steph said! That is beautiful and if it wasn't close to 100 degrees here I would be dying to wear it!!
