Question about fabric on 50's dress and OPINIONS

Question about fabric on 50\'s dress and OPINIONS

Sigh.... I have this beautiful 1950's party dress that had several tears in the lace on the back on the bodice, I mended them and they looked great but I just wasn't happy with them.

So, I decided to have my seamstress reconstruct the bodice and make it into a strapless dress, it turned out great and looks much better. It has a side metal zipper, a boned bodice and will fit up to a size 44 bust.

What are your thoughts on my having had this done? I of course will disclose it in the auction but how should I word it?
One more question, the lace overlay, it is not soft like lace but stiff like net? What is that called? Floral Net?

TIA, Tori

how about; tulle floral netting

Also just a point that you might like to mention in your auction when describing the fact you altered the dress, it will be more comfortable this way, if the net is stiff as you mentioned that may have been a bit uncomfortable to wear..
dress is lovely, it now reminds me of swan lake.

Yes, it would be very uncomfortable against the skin.

I've got to go to the fabric store anyway so I guess I'll bring a piece and ask someone there.
Linda, thanks

Well, I like it better the "new" way than the old! I don't think the alteration will be at all a hindrance in selling it. I think I've called this fabric "floral lace netting" before.

Not just a reconstruction, but a resurrection! It's a totally different dress, way more hip and will probably appeal to the modern girl better.

As long as the construction is well done and it blends well, I wouldn't mention the alteration. It's not obvious, could have been that way all along, and there's no putting it back. It is how it is. A lovely strapless dress.

Thanks you guys! I appreciate the help on the netting and opinions on the reconstruction.

I never did make it to the fabric store so I will just go with floral lace netting.

Yes I think the word netting paints a picture
and I agree, no need to mention the alteration as it is tastefully done.

I agree that the dress looks better after the alteration. However, I do think the changes should be disclosed in the listing. The dress is not original in that it has been altered; I think that should always be disclosed.

BTW, I was thinking this might make a good <a href="http://www.vintagefashionguild.org/public/viewthread.php?tid=4299" target=blank">wedding dress for Yvonne's daughter</a>, but on second thought I think it is probably too big. :(
