Regional accent quiz - do you have an accent?

Apparently my non-accent (RP) has come out as The Inland North. Whatever that is!

"You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop.""

I'm regularly accused of not really being from London or even England, I think they think my accent is too 'posh' to be real (but I can hear the South London twang....odd). Still, it means I can get away with swearing because people seem to find it hilarious when it comes out sounding so 'refined'. ;)

Apparently I sound like I am from the midlands (Penn - Ohio - Missouri - southern Indiana/Illinois) except I know someone who was born and bred in Pennsylvania and he has an accent to my ears! Its subtle but I can hear it. I was NOT going to be taken in by the 'about' question, which is the word all Americans think we Canadians pronounce as 'aboot', which we don't. Its an Eastern Canadian thing eh?

At least they said I probably have a good accent for television and radio.

And I don't have that HORRIBLE Buffalo accent! As in "I Bawt a pair of sacks todeh"

Ellenm - I'm from Montreal and the test seems consistent as they pegged Lei as a Bostonian as well.

Jonathan - when I go to the US they peg me as Canadian right away with my out and about. I've also lost some gigs for voice work because of my supposed "aboot" and I and everyone else I know swear I DO NOT SAY ABOOT!!!

Okay, I'm in denial...possibly...

I'm surprised they didn't ask how one pronounced - "roof"

When i am around people that are from south or east boston and have a very strong, almost indecipherable at times boston accent, they think i am from Queens. Now, i don't have any idea what people from Queens sound like as opposed to anywhere else. From people who live a bit farther out they think i am from Wisconsin.

In Florida, some people peg me for Michiganian (true!) but i get the occasional Wisconsin (well i ddi live there too).

When i am in Michigan - they think i sound "normal" but with a slight lean towards a boston accent, oddly enough.

I pan out according to quiz as "inland north"

That is hilarious! And completely true. The most common guess about my accent is Philadelphia. And just like this says, I am from Florida and I used to do voiceovers. I always attributed it to having a flat non-regional boarding school accent --- even though my old friends claim I have developed quite a magnolia mouth since moving to Texas.

Yes.

Bostonians pahk the cah but pennsylvanians (some) warsh the car

Wow - I'm surprised the quiz nailed me - Inland North - with the Northeast and then Philadelphia. I'm a Philly native and can hear the accent a mile away. I tend to pick it up when I'm there, and people in Maine say I still have a bit of the sound.

But to people in Philadelphia I have a Maine accent!

Lorinda - where in Maine did you grow up? I live in Portland.

I'm midland, too, but it doesnt mention Iowa. Because its so lame no one wants to consider that its here! I've always thought that I dont have an "accent" but sometimes I notice a little northern Minn/Wisc. thing happening. Travelling to southern Illinois once I got hassled for calling "pop" soda, & a copper coin a "penny" rather than "pinny". Funny how close they were, though. Ang

Nailed me. I grew up in the Dallas suburbs (lived there 25 years), and my parents were from Nebraska- solidly Midland America. The Texas accent does show up if I'm around other Southerners, or need to order iced tea (iced tea trips me up every dang time), but other than that people tell me I'm accent-less. LOL

Wash = warsh is tollerable.

Squash = sqwarsh is punishable by many years in prison....

hahahahhahaha everyone tells me I have a very strong canadian accent -- I notice many americans pronounce "N" like "in" no matter what vowel is in front of it. canadians say "en"

i say the letter N "en" - maybe its because i am from "canada north" (detroit) and watched the kids shows on CBC. had to just remember at school it was a to z (zee, not zed)

I only got 70% of State Capitals, which is sad because I used to know them all by heart. 30 years ago....

I was the kid getting 100's (or at least high-90's) on their geography tests. :sniff:
