Remember way back in 2004 when we used to dress like this?

I was in Value Village the other day and actually scored some great things - not old, but good things including Enzo Angiolini shoes... I came home and did some searches to see if I could figure out exactly how old they were and came across a site with this image.... can you believe this is from 2004? The clothing actually looks noticably dated - its funny how things change so slowly you don't notice, but only 8 years later and everything in this pic looks outre...

LOL Jonathan, I wouldn't know as I still have clothes that I wear from 1999 including the shirt I currently have on! :USING: Those look like new fangled fashions to me!

You mean low rises aren't in fashion any more?????:puzzled:

Man, I'm really livin' in the past with my low rises and flares. Says the girl who rides her horse with things from the 1930's....

Lei - PLEASE tell me you don't have the short shirt and thong undies in combo with the low rise jeans though to expose the muffin top belly and 'y' thong strap..... it was never a good look!
I thought it was interesting that those strappy sandals are gone, especially in light and metallic colours for daytime wear - they never seemed to fit anyone's feet! and the assymetical hemlines - the long bold print tops, mules, and some of those boho looking strappy dresses and smocked dresses.

These folks look pretty normal and "current" for my part of the world, with the exception of the girl on the far right in the purple get-up.. And I still like and wear the long bold print tops and the asymmetrical hemlines. I don't think anyone in Vermont has been told that low rise jeans and short tops are "out." Still very much around, I'm afraid.

LOL, I am proud to say that I have NEVER worn a thong! I do like low rises on me though as they balance my tall height as I'm short waisted for my height. Normal rise jeans make me look as if I'm pregnant or wearing a diaper. All my tops come from the tall shop so they are long enough to cover the "gap" normal length tops leave between the waist band of low rises.

See? there is method to the madness!

:hysterical: Funny how the intersection between geography and style works, isn't it?

It's not the individual styles in the photo that seem dated (they've all walked through the door here at one time or another)--it's just all of them together, with that acid yellow background!

And as much as I've been praying for "high waist" pants to return, they really haven't yet... They're creeping upward. true, and now half-cover the navel. But I still love my 80s (and 50s, and 30s) high waisted pants, and wish there were some contemporary options too!

Many of those fashions are still around here too - and the blouse I wore this morning was from 2000. I still love it (red roses on black wrap around georgette, what's not to love?) but I feel more appropriately dressed now I've changed into a late '30s dressing gown. Yep, that's me: I pay a lot of attention to fashion but it's never really worked for me so I retreated into "never in or out" vintage fashion, aka dressing to suit myself.

Really wish those hipster jeans/muffin top styles would go away. Their time is over! Although I kind of cheer whenever someone popularises an impractical fashion (like asymetrical skirts) because they never last long and make the era easier to identify. Ra-ra skirts anyone?

I have to say I'm another vote for the low rise jeans & trousers, I can't wear another other style due to angular hips and like Lei I'm tall so I wear extra long tops at all times.

M&S is still pushing the asymmetrical skirts and dresses in older ladies styles here in the UK, I've never liked that style!

I see some things there that I wore :BAGUSE: - like the asymmetrical skirts. Best in a slinky poly dress with a v-neck. Threw the last one out last year or so, because it was a really nice dress that came from a little boutique in Montreal where they basically made the dresses in the back of the shop. But I realised this just wasn't "me" anymore. But I never wore thongs... though I do like jeans that don't rise too high (otherwise my backside looks huge!), I don't like them too low either. I still have a hard time finding just the right shape & rise - I may be fairly thin, but I have curves where a lot of women my size don't seem to have curves anymore... Thankfully I've just been on a holiday to the US (though no vintage shopping opportunities along the way) and found some great jeans at the shop where I always seem to find jeans that fit me - and since they never seem to put a recognisable brand logo on the outside of their jeans either, I like them even more .
I liked the strappy sandals though - still do!

Just give it all another 5 or ten years and it will be back in style again!

I am also a fan of the lower rise jean...not the ultra low rise, but the kind that still rides below the natural waistline. I'm also tall and find this is the best fit for me. And NO the thong cleavage is just trashy. Who wants to see that.

What I can't stand right now is the legging jean and the pencil jean. They are great if you're a tiny size, but at a size 14 you just end up looking like you're walking around on two pointy ice cream cones. The trouser jean and the bootcut jeans were my fave and I'm still waiting for them to come back around. All the cute colored pants and cords in the Gap for the last two seasons have been ultra skinny :o( I used to go to the GAP all the time to get my pants and t-shirts and now I don't even bother unless I'm buying straight denim.

Well, I only wear them to dance class, so I guess "public" depends on what you mean exactly. No, I don't wear them (yoga pants) unless I am dancing or working out. Oh, and never does a thong edge peek from the top of my pants, ';)

hahahah!>>>

Well, I have another solution to the VPL issue: wear high waisted knickers! Sure, they're awfully modest but they're also awfully comfortable. "Thongs" (we call flip flops thongs so call thongs g-strings) always seem to get where they shouldn't and look very unattractive peaking out the top of your low rise jeans or hipster skirt.

Skinny jeans are cute as long as they don't make my hips look too wide :hysterical: - it really depends on the overall shape. Worse are the loose fitting khakis that were all over the place here last summer and that reminded me so much of the 90s. They did to my hips what even too skinny jeans can't quite do. Ugh.
We used to have a trainee at the place where I worked at the time, her g-string/thong was always showing above too low-cut jeans... I think she didn't even realise it. But let's not forget, the absolute crowning glory at the time (if we must go for the really scary stuff) was if you had a tribal-style tattoo that would show above the waistline of the thong :BAGUSE: and below your top, in the back. I don't know what you call it in English. The German expression for it isn't very nice so I won't mention it. I ask myself how many people there are out there today who could probably kick themselves for having had that kind of thing done... I als remember mail-order catalogs at that time offered thongs that were supposed to peek out of your super-low-rise jeans, and were even decorated for that purpose. Scaaaaaary!
