Maggie, most of my site traffic and customers come from Google searches, where I am on page one for most basic vintage related searches (vintage dress, 20s dress, 30s dress, 40s dress, 50s dress, 60s dress, vintage lingerie, etc)....I work hard at my code and keeping content & tags relevant to keep the bots aware of my site (thanks Linda!).
I do link exchanges, have been mentioned on well read blogs, get repeat business and referrals from happy customers, post on message boards, am involved with both the VFG and the eVintage society, sell on etsy with links to my main site and try to keep updates going on my blog, myspace and a newsletter I sign every customer who buys from me on the site up for.
What I wouldnt have done would have been to close up eBay before my site was well established and bringing in (fairly) steady traffic and sales! I worried eBay was where I was getting my exposure, and whether it was or not I'll never really know....my tracking on the site rarely showed any coming from eBay, but people could have found me there and googled my name as well.
Most clients I've developed and had conversations with will not shop eBay, actually.
I'll still list stuff there occassionally, but the store is closed and I'm more interested in developing etsy as a venue for newer vintage and patterns/textiles with my 2 shops there.
