According to their web site, it all started with Fess Parker and his Davy Crockett hat.

HERE is the story they tell. It's interesting and certainly one perspective. I think "dress-up boxes" and an appreciation for style, quality and uniqueness play in there big time. Then again, I am a child of the Davy Crockett days ("Born on a mountain top in Tennessee") and can't quite grasp clothes from the 1990's as vintage.
 
How interesting. Those original coats must be as rare as hens teeth as they say.
I still see raccoon hats from time to time but most likely faux fur.
