Hi,

I agree this is a great thread and I am learning too, about the use of the term in the UK. I was referring specifically to its use in the USA when I said it is inaccurate to call a vintage costume by that term. In the UK, things are very different, I did refer to that. What a shame that it has become a derogatory term over there.

Yes I do see what you mean, and thanks for all the great information. You've made me yearn to see an original 'fancy dress costume' from an opulent ball.

I always think of the scene in 'Rebecca' (1930s) where such a ball is a pivotal point in the plot.
