I recently purchased a "mystery" wedding dress that was still sealed up in the original Le Boeuf preservation box dated 1963. When I unsealed it, I almost threw up. The best way to describe the smell would be smoky BBQ sauce mixed with old lady talcum powder from the 50's. I've hung it up outside for hours and it still smells. Any advice on how to get this really strange smell out of the dress ? It's a heavy satin material. Thanks !

See if any of your local drycleaners do ozone treaments. I had a lot of very musty 1920s - 1940s pieces done and it did wonders. Gentler than drycleaning and cheaper, at least in my area.

If it smells like smoke, it may have been through a fire. It is very hard to get that smell out, but the ozone treatment should help.
