Suede Coat - Fur identification and era?

Hi all,

I've had this for a while and just broke it out because it's really cold here this morning!! I realized that I don't know much about this particular style and wondered when the coat/jacket may be from? Is it vintage or more modern? Also, what type of fur is it? There are no other tags besides the one I have included in the photos.It is the softest fur I think I have felt before and I LOVE wearing this coat because it keeps me so warm!

Hi there,

The fur is possum which is very soft. I think the coat is a contemporary one. I am not sure if it's on the cusp of vintage but I'm leaning towards the latter part of the 90s, could even be into the early 2000s.

Just so I know for my own knowledge, what is it that makes this one contemporary? Now I know the fur, when I google "suede jacket with opossum fur collar" I find lots of jackets that look just like this from the 1970s. There are a few from the 90s but they all are faux fur and not real.

I am sure many see the belted style and mistakenly guess 70s based on that.

There are always exceptions in any era however similar belted coats from the 70s generally had a fitted waist, tapered waist, or princess cut.
The sleeves at the time were generally a bit tighter as well.

The fur type is also possum. Opossum is a different animal.

They have no natural predators in New Zealand, so their introduction there was a catastrophe for their nature. New Zealand is probably the best example as to why animals shouldn't be introduced where they don't belong naturally. It's not just the possums, unfortunately. Feral cats and pigs, stoats and so on... But anyway, they are good in New Zealand at putting possum fur to good use. Merino wool and possum fur gloves are the best! So I wasn't surprised about seeing possum fur on a coat from New Zealand.

Their fur is SO soft :)
