Swimming in Vintage Swimwear

Hi! I love swimwear of the 40s and 50s, but I have been wondering if it is safe to swim in vintage swimsuits. I have recently purchased a 50s cotton one piece suit (It has elastic smocking at the back with no closures; just stretch for entry).I hope to be able to wear it for swimming, but I am afraid of ruining it. Could anyone offer insight on the matter?

Thanks!

Hi Delaney,

Like any vintage item you want to treat it with some respect. It can be worn for swimming, that's it's purpose, but modern day chemicals, in the pool and on the body, will play havoc on most fabrics. I suggest a light hand wash after you wear it and rolled in a towel to get out the excess moisture, then dry it away from sunlight.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the cotton, but the elastic can be a problem because the rubber sometimes breaks down. I'd limit the suit's exposure to water, and then treat afterward as Pam suggests.
