Roll on garter:- in action
I wanted to find out if a roll on garter was comfortable to wear and maybe more important for a lady did they work effectively and hold up a stocking.
I took these photos one with the garter rolled in all the cotton welt above the knee and the second one rolling it further down below the knee thus also including some silk in the roll, I did the photos first so I could wear the garter sort of forgetting that I had one so I could be more subjective about the comfort
My findings:-
Above the knee.. The garter held firmer and kept the stocking a little tighter and ever after 1 1/2 wear did not show significant movement
Below the knee...The garter roll was thicker but did sow signs of movement after 15 minutes so wearing rolled down stocking below the knee was really for show I think.
What I did find very surprising is that after about 15 minutes I could not feel I was wearing the garter at all, it might be I have slightly thicker legs than a lady up their was very with little or no discomfort.
So to conclude i would say that i have proved that roll on garters for ladies not wearing corset/girdle in the 1920's was a very practicable solution.
With sheer nylons it might be different. I would also say the practice of wearing roll on garters died out because of the stockings been made longer from the 30's (because hem line rose and stocking were cheaper to make by now) It was now not just using of the girdle been able to hold the stocking up but also as a dual role for the stocking to hold a open bottom girdle down which was I think relatively important, I might be wrong with the last part!
If you want to wear a 20's dress and stocking without a corset or girdle then I would recommend you to make yourself a pair of roll on garters.

By the way as you have spotted the shoes are modern but the frilly knickers are original 20's along with the white stocking!
I would also like to thank every one who has posted scans or information which has made this project possible.
