The name of the pattern in this knit sweater

I used to know the name and cannot for the life of me remember what this type of knit is called.

It's a knit stitch. What you're seeing is how the variegated yarn knits up.

I think the variation in color is called space dye....I just thought of it when I came back to look at the reply. Or maybe not.

Yes to space dyed. Space dyeing often uses more than two colors, but it can be just two. You could also call it marled.

ETA, I can't see which it is, but marled yarn is two or more plys of different colours that are spun together to create variagation, where as space dye is done on the finished yarn , by applying dye at intervals, like dip dyeing. It looks more like space dye as far as I can see, but both could be useful descriptions.

Just a close up may not be space dye but I might use it as the contemporary market is using the term for similar knits.
