Today's OT Challenge - Silly Town Names

Now I have never been to this one, but there really is a Monkeys' Eyebrow, Ky down past Paducah on the Ohio River.

oh man... y'all beat me to the only one I can think of right now.

I've actually BEEN to Big Bone Lick State Park in KY!

Oh oh!! And that town that named itself after a 50's gameshow.. what was it?? Ah yes.. "Truth or Consequences".

I haven't been to this one, but it's natural in the progression of this thread:

Maggie's Nipples, Wyoming

oh, i have to join in! lincolnshire i'm sure has a wealth of ridiculous names to offer but at the moment i can only remember

- spital in the street

and

- mavis enderby (on the way to skegness)

and there is a road either mavis enderby or in theddlethorpe (the next village) which is actually called 'fanny hands lane' - the sign for which i still have a photograph somewhere.

when we were about 14 that was a source of constant amusement, and i have to say possibly slightly ruder for us brits. i think i'll apologise and stop there....

:BAGUSE:

Was there a proper english lady named Mrs. Fanny Hands and it was named after her? Or maybe it is short for an odd gents name (an odd name, not an odd gent).

Climax, Saskatchewan

Vulcan, Alberta (yes, they have a Star Trek festival every year).

Port Moody, BC (every one there has PMS at the same time!)

OMG!! I'm just reading this now for the first time!!:hysterical::hysterical::hysterical:

This is TOO much!!:wacko::wacko:

I like Giggleswick and Blubberhouses! I've always poked fun at Grimsby, but I prefer Guelph. I've joked that it sounds like something that happens when you have a really bad flu - or drank more than your share the night before!

"Uh oh! I think I'm gonna GUELPH!":barf:

Monkeys' Eyebrow, Harry's Armpit, Spital in the Street - are my fav's!

Buffalo has a section of town (the one with all the old mansions) where the streets are named Essex, Sussex, Middlesex, Nottingham, etc.

I think that the really wacky names are more common in the South and out West. Sure, there's weird names in the Northeast, but it doesn't seem as common. English and Native American names are the norm. The streets in the little town my dad lives in are Oneida, Onondaga, Mohawk, etc. I remember seeing totally wacky names on road trips from Buffalo to Austin, though.

But, I can't remember any right now. No matter, these might not be top-able!

My all-time favorite has been French Lick, Indiana. I also like Surprise, Arizona, named because they couldn't believe people would settle there and the town would thrive.

French Lick is supposed to get a Donald Trump Casino --

the name possibilites for that are astounding

Joe Batt's Arm and Hibbs Hole, but I think they renamed it to Hibbs Harbour. Yeah, that sounds SO much more refined now...
