Hi there

Does anyone have any information on Trina Lewis & Marjon Couture. Founders, When it/they were founded. Whats the relationship to Barker Sportswear? I can't seem to find anything online.

This is my first post so thanks for reading!

Hi and welcome to the forums, Sue! I actually had a dress by them - years ago... and there seem to be a few items by them floating around Etsy and Ebay, usually listed as from the 70s or 80s (mine was from the 70s). Let's hope that one of our members here maybe knows more!

If you have a garment with these labels, please post a photo and we can try to help

Thank you so much. This is the label. We're writing some history on our website of the piece and want to know a bit more about the brand but can't find anything online.

Hi Karin.
Thanks so much for the welcome. I've used your amazing resource for ages but never posted. Hopefully someone will be able to help. I need some information on Yvonne Jacovou too so I'll put a post up about that.

Many thanks
Sue

We can’t see the file. Please attach it using the upload file button at the bottom of the box
I could see it on my laptop but not on my tablet.

HERE is a tiny reference to Marjon and Baker and HERE is a bit more information about Baker, Marjon, and Jonas. As soon as I saw the name of Jonas' first wife, Marie Jonas, I realized that name was most likely the inspiration for "Marjon."
I have seen labels saying Marjon Couture without Trina Lewis (I had a 60s dress with this label) so I guess Trina Lewis was a designer they brought in at a later stage.

I did not find any reference in one article to both Marjon and Trina Lewis, but I found a bit about Trina Lewis Ltd. One early (1953) blurb stated: “Dress designer Trina Lewis, fitting a mannequin with a strapless evening top, listened to the girl’s complaints about the difficulty of fitting these tops if you make your own clothes. So, Mrs. Lewis, business woman as well as dress designer, worked out an ingenious bodice—made of cambric—boned, taped, and zippered, which a home-dressmaker can use as a lining to a strapless dress. Store buyers showed such enthusiasm that she’s now manufacturing them as fast as she can . . . (they) do away with that tiresome necessity—the boned bra.”

On and off from that 1953 reference, through the late 1980’s, classified ads appeared from Tina Lewis, Ltd., soliciting help from machinists for her business. In 1994 a notice of insolvency appeared for Trina Lewis Limited.

I have found a few dresses from 'Baker Sportswear' in W1 dating to the 50's. Also found a few 1960s with a label for Trina Lewis & Marjon Couture at Baker Sportswear, Mayfair W1. Mayfair possibly being a new bit of info.

Edit: Also just found a label which does not mention Marjon Couture, just Trina Lewis, at Baker Sportswear, looks 60s, flowing psychedelic maxi dress. So I suppose we can potentially surmise their partnership began or established itself in the 60s?
