The vest is a rare garment in the lack of ambiguity surrounding its origins, at least according to Samuel Pepy’s October 8, 1666, diary entry: "The King hath yesterday in council declared his resolution of setting a fashion for clothes, which he will never alter. It will be a vest, I know not well how; but it is to teach the nobility thrift, and will do good.”
Though it’s clear that Mr. Pepys was dubious regarding the social welfare benefits of the king’s rather uninspiring entry into the fashion industry, credit must be given Charles II for an idea that has evolved into myriad forms both fashionable and utilitarian.
