Vintage Inspirations: Quilty pleasures
Patchwork is a form of needlework that involves sewing together pieces of fabric into a larger design. Evidence of patchwork has been found throughout history—The earliest examples have been located in Egyptian tombs and also from 5000 years ago in China, according to Wikipedia. Patchwork’s history is rich and varied: Quilts were used to keep medieval knights protected and warm, they were used to show secret escape routes along the Underground Railroad to enslaved African Americans, and were essential to the ‘make do and mend’ war effort during WW2.
Once a symbol of poverty, patchwork has been elevated again for this season’s runways. Michael Kors, Anna Sui, and Oscar de la Renta are all embracing the nostalgic feel and folk aesthetic of this traditional art.
This week don’t leave us in stitches, show us your patchwork pieces in clothing, outerwear, and accessories!
