Vintage Inspirations: Ruffles and Flourishes

Can there be too many ruffles? Apparently not, according to Spring 2022 runways. We’re getting all kinds of vintage prom and peignoir vibes this spring, referencing 1930s flouncy hems to 1970s ruffles and tiers by way of 1950s layers of tulle. And even though the trend is super feminine, don’t forget those ruffled tux shirts. Get ready to flourish in vintage ruffles this spring!

It's prom season, and this 50s net formal with origami petal bust has an elaborate ruffled skirt. Shown with and without crinoline.


A 50s New Look taffeta cocktail dress by Young Hollywood, with tiered ruffled skirt and tiny ruffles edging the neckline and cap sleeves.


This one is 70s Cottagecore, so easy to wear that it would be perfect for Coachella or other warm weather festivals.


Another pinafore style dress, this one is 40s, with girly pink rickrack and embroidery.


And a 70s piece from Lanvin, with a double ruffled neckline and body formed by a floor length column of crystal pleating. It's elevated enough to consider for eveningwear, although the designer's original intent was most likely loungewear.
