West Side Story
Set in the 1950s, West Side Story focuses on a turf war between two rival gangs on New York's Upper West Side; the Jets - a white gang, and the Sharks; a Puerto Rican gang. Starring Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer as star-crossed lovers destined for tragedy, the film is an adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical of the same name, which in turn was inspired by William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet.
Released in 1961, the film was an instant sensation, embraced by the public and critics alike to become the highest grossing film of the year. It was honored with 10 of the 11 Academy Awards it was nominated for - including Best Picture, and is widely considered to be a milestone in movie musicals, as well as one of the greatest musicals of all time. A new film adaptation by Steven Spielberg is set to be released next month.
In celebration of this iconic film's 60th anniversary, the VFG is singing its praises with a parade of our most fabulous '50s fashions.
