Why are the buttons fading this suit?

It's a vintage rayon jacket (with matching skirt) and some sort of crackled plastic buttons. They look like lucite or celluloid.

The fading goes all the way through the material, but fortunately doesn't show when it's buttoned up.

Have you seen this before?

It looks like something that would happen at a 'drycleaners' when they use a flat steam press.------ Notice on the back shot how the material is pressed wrinkled.

The buttons are 'off-gassing' -- the early plastic they are made from is breaking down and one of the byproducts of the breaking down process is a gas like sulphur or benzine or something like that which is reacting with the chemical dye of the suit. Its not usually that obvious but I have seen colour change before from off-gassing old plastics, especially celluloid.

Thanks!

I've removed the buttons to (hopefully) prevent any more fading.

Anyone want some toxic buttons for their collection?
