Hi Victoria, yes I agree with Joules, that it is likely to have been made as a theatrical costume-Oklahoma is a good bet. There is also an an outside chance that it was made as a prom dress or for a wedding- I know in the 70's I wore something not that different to this dress to a family wedding...
A huge congratulations to Nicole, and a wonderful piece of exposure! I was the lucky one who being in Australia got to read this article in hard copy format this morning over coffee. Yeah :drinkingtoast:
Hi Melanie- that dress is stunning, what a shame it doesnt fit you, or it would be a keeper for sure!. And all my best of luck for your áudition and also the opera production starting with the M word- of course we dont say the name of it here', as its very bad luck- in theatre world we just call...
Hi Maggie, and gold stars to Nicole for covering the Australian definitions perfectly ;). The only term I know for larger corduroy that is commmonly used here, is the very uninspired term "-Jumbo Cord
I will certainly check out all these fabulous links later today !
Cheers Gayle x
Hi Victoria, yes like Ruth said the fabric is usually called Toile. The dress looks 1970's too me, and I am speculating that perhaps it was made to simulate a period costume, and could have originally been worn with a full petticoat.
Cheers,
Gayle
Hi Louis, I had a vinyl satchel style bag with a very similar comic strip print, around 1983. I dont think mine was actually Fiorucci but it was around the time that these bags were hugely popular. Being in Australia we probably got them later than you in the USA, so I would go very early 1980s...
Yes, I am sure that the trades that the convicted were engaged in, also had a lot to do with the decision to transport them as convicts , with the early penal settlment needing workers with those skills- at least tailors and weavers anyway maybe.Australias history can be so fascinating, and so...

Well its great to meet others that do the same thing, costume world can seem small sometimes when you are working a show or a project, but then when you can meet people from the other side of the world doing similar things you go, there's actually a lot of us out there hunched over a sewing...
Hi forever52!
I work in costuming too, and collecting vintage can be a bit of an occupational hazard cant it!. Trouble is, once you start selling it you get hopelessly addicted to it, and then still have to somehow get the costumes made as well!!
I look forward to seeing your photos ...
Hi Cerian,
So wonderful to hear from someone in Ireland! Wow you must have your work cut out with two little ones that age!! Welcome aboard ;)
Cheers and Greetings from Australia,
Gayle x
Love all those fabulous trees! Well my tree is a work in progress,dear-heart is working crazy hours until Xmas eve, so I hauled this into the house on my own, got the lights all in there- then found out they dont work any more! I had to tie it to the window frame to keep it upright, and it is on...
Hi!
Like Nicole and Lei have said, it is a tricky thing getting the size right- but they have given you excellent advise. With the bras I sell, most are the actual bust size, unlike modern band sizes. So a 38B in a vintage bra often literally means a 38 bust size, but a much smaller band size...
Hi Vanessa, I am in Australia too ;)
Lucky you- what a score! If they are pure cotton, or cotton with some rayon and/or rayon thread I would date them as 1950's to 1960's, but there may be a lace specialist amongst the guild!
Hope they do well for you!
cheers,Gayle
Wow, small world- I keep Rosemarys book 'Bra's a private View' near the computer for bra reference- I would love to see her show!! Maybe she would consider coming to Australia :scratchchin:
Hi Nicole, well done scoring the Ossie!! hope the work to be done on it goes seamlessly ( he-he), and I cant wait to see your new website- it launches tomorrow doesnt it??
cheers,Gayle
