Dating an apple green 'tulip' dress?

Pellon. Buckram. It's all the same sort of thing. A stiff fabric never used on the outside of a garment and only meant to create and keep a certain shape/silhouette. Pellon's a name brand, if I recall correctly.

Help with figuring out the buttons/fastening for this 1940's dress

Don't think the two sides are supposed to link together directly. Perhaps there were chains or something else to attach them together? Is there anything on the INSIDE of the placket? Not very helpful, I know. Pretty dress.

    Dating sequined Colorama cardigan, 50's?

Not only had I read your blog post already, Nicole, I nearly left the same comment I already left the first time around. Aging. Not for the faint of heart. You seem to be avoiding it completely. What's your secret?

    Victorian or Edwardian undergarment skirt?

I think it's 1910s. I can see Melanie's point, but people didn't wear cotton, embroidered petticoats of that sort in the 50s under those drop-waist dresses. Too lumpy. They wore very full, smooth nylon crinolines with a snug, dropped waist. And the closure is exactly like all the closures on all...

    Is this Lame?

    It's a confusing topic. Here's an old thread: https://forums.vintagefashionguild.org/threads/fabric-question-lurex-or-lame-or-something-different.30264/

Looks to be rayon. Sometimes called viscose in the U.K.

Dyeing rayon crepe with colour change (or chemically bleached marks?)

Following along to see what happens. Worst case scenario, color in the faded spots and then wear it only in dark, moody bars and cabarets.

    50s / 60s ? Carlye Dress

Beautiful dress. Late 50s/early 60s, as Cin says. FYI, there were serged seams all the way back to the 1800s. They just weren't as common and looked a bit different due to the different machinery.

What fabric and rust spot on white?

The fabric would be called faille (pronounced file). Looks/feels like grosgrain (note the s -- it means "big" it means "big grain"). In fact, you could call it grosgrain, too : ). Lovely dress. As for the little spot, it could be rust but could also be the result of wood/paper acids. Have you...

Style and real or faux fur?

It's a jacket : ). Can you see inside anywhere? You can tell if it's real fur if you can see where the pelts are sewn together. It's much easier to tell if you can see the back of the fur. Even real fur can be super even and smooth, when it's "sheared." Maybe Caryn will chime in and give you...

Dating an apple green 'tulip' dress?

Pretty. Looks like a (early to mid) 60s party dress. That stiff, white lining stuff is probably buckram. It's just a stiff, woven interfacing fabric that helps the dress keep its shape. I'd call it a "tulip skirt," too : ). Organza describes the weave of the fabric, and can be made of many...

    1970s ? Paris blouse

Definitely some sort of crepe. Probably rayon. Looks late 60s/70s to me at first glance (long, big, pointy collar). But I don't know for sure, of course. No labels at all?

A black velvet hooded coat - dating?

Just some trivia for you --> Edgar J. Kaufmann, who owned the department store your gorgeous coat is from, commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design and build his house, voted the #1 work of American architecture, "Falling Water" (1935). As for the date, it could be late 30s. There was a bit...

help dating worumbo wool coat - early 50s?

Seems 50s to me, so I'd say yes to your hunch. FYI, Worumbo was a label owned by Forstman & Co., from here in Georgia. It was first used in 1914, so by the time your lovely coat was made it was already quite an old brand.

    new fiber

Interesting! Ever read "Green Mansions," by W.H. Hudson, 1904? Mom tells me it was required school reading in her day, and it was even made into a (lousy) film. Wonderful book, though, in which the heroine, "Rima the Bird Girl," wear's a dress of spider's silk. That was my favorite part of the...
