Question about vintage resources for learning

There is a ton of info on VintageFashionGuild and it's all free. I would start here. I am an author and collector and learn from my friends here every day. I would start with a general vintage reference book unless you know that you really only want to study the 20s.

    Millinery ribbon

Thanks, Barbara, The petersham and old grosgrain I bought had the rounded bumps on both edges. You could unravel it and the the bumps were the weft thread. On the new poly grosgrain, the ridges are heat set and the edges are straight. When you unravel it, the warp yarns look like they have a...

    Millinery ribbon

I know petersham is used for head bands in hats. It is a narrow ribbed fabric and easy to shape. It used to be all cotton, then some was cotton/rayon, and now most of the new is all rayon. Was it always called millinery ribbon? If not, what was it called ? When used in hats, how much can you...

Alaskine was really a wonderful 60s fabric--nice structure without a lot of interfacing.

Removing red dots form clothes labels

I used INSTAclean (from HSN) to remove an old stain from Charlie's lab coat. It might have been a blood stain. It was on the sleeve and I put a cloth inside the sleeve so the stain wouldn't migrate.

Really needing helping dating 2 items both tags have been removed and i am stumped.

The tags were probably cut out because the store or manufacturer sent it to a resale shop. If the the blouse had a dress, the top would have been a slip top. It might have had a skirt.

    Asymmetrical garments

Jonathan, do you measure the garments. When I worked on the Worth-Mainbocher exhibit at MCMY. I measure the garments, but not the individual sides. I must admit I was not looking for asymmetry. The Lanvin skirt reminds me that I have a very long YSL skirt. I had a friend when I was growing up...

    Asymmetrical garments

This is a couture Chanel suit. The center seam at the back is very off center which would indicate that the client had an asymmetrical body. I've discussed this with my sewing friends; the consensus is maybe scoliosis. This isn't noticeable from the front until you look closely, then you can...

    Who done it?

Valentina; She designed the costumes for Philadelphia Story. This dress is at Museum of the City of NY and may have been from Valentina. Several years ago it had a Valentina exhibit. I have more photos from the exhibition; and I examined some of the designs, but not this one. I've never seen...

    Who done it?

not Chanel, not James. 2 hints: it's a woman; she did the costumes for several movies.

    Who done it?

I agree it is hard. The dress is probably 30s--maybe early 40s. I have the photos from the exhibition but not the labels.

    Fur jacket

Can you rip a small section of the lining hem? Fur and fake fur are very different on the undersides. Fur is a skin; fake fur is a fabric.

Authentication of a DIOR clothing label

When we went to Vietnam, I went shopping in the sewing supplies district. You could buy designer labels by the roll. I bought several designer ties, all had faux labels from famous houses. The VFG label resource is a wonderful resource and it's free; donations are always welcome.

Unable to identify this dress. - help!

The belting looks like petersham. This is the new word for grosgrain. Petersham was always used in Europe; grosgrain, in the US. When polyester grosgrain came on the market, the name of woven ribbons was changed to petersham in the US. Polyester grosgrain is heat stamped to make ridges...

Recent Vogue articles featuring VFG member Kerry Taylor

Thanks for the links to the articles. They are fun. I missed Kerry's auction--probably because I haven't bought anything in several years. In the past, I bought some fabulous pieces. One is a 70s Chanel suit which I wear the jacket frequentl. Unfortunately, shipping has become more expensive...

Dead or alive? What modern women think about wearing slips.

I have several--maybe a dozen or more--hanging on a belt hanger. My favorite is a rather plain black silk slip. Oh, yes, and they there is a drawer of half-slips, but I mostly wear pant slips which I prefer to linings.
