Thank you all. I tried the burn test but I am really not good at it. Besides finding out it's not self extinguishing, the rest I have no idea. The smell had nothing specific to it like the ones listed in the chart in the resource, maybe paper at best. The fire was pretty large from such a small...
I am trying to get a digital copy since it’s an old photograph. Grandma is convinced it was in the early 60s but I suppose being 94 her memory may not be as accurate.
I forgot to mention that neither the skirt nor suit are lined. Does that make a difference when dating it?
I know for a fact it’s earlier than the 70s because my grandmother has a photo with her friend wearing it dating back to either ‘63 or ‘64 but I had doubts about it being 40s so I think it probably is from the 60s
Hi all,
I am wondering about a date on this suit. It belonged to a friend of my grandmother which she swore she wore in the 40s in Europe. The zipper doesn't seem right to me for that period but I suppose it could have been replaced later. Thoughts?
Thank you
Victoria
Unfortunately the photos don't do it justice but I love this shirt and especially the collar detail. I thought 80s but wanted a second opinion. I read a whole bunch of sites on BB labels but it doesn't seem like they were very consistent in terms of how they used them. Also, what is the back...
Hi all,
I acquired a pretty large collection of hats and I am only venturing into these for the first time. I reviewed the hat resource in detail but I am hoping for some input to identify the names of hat styles as well as dating. I see elements of pillbox, skull cap, toy hat, and tilt hats...
Hi all,
Any advice on how to clean the spots on this purse? I never noticed them initially. They seem to be only obvious from a certain angle but I would love to try to clean them without destroying the plastic beads or mother of pearl trim.
Thanks
Victoria
Thank you. I looked at brocade but I always thought of brocade as a heavier fabric. This is very lightweight but the pattern is definitely part of the weaving process and not embroidered.
Hi all,
I looked through the fabric resource but I am still not sure. Would this be embossed cotton or is there another name for this type of weave? Also, would you say 50s or 60s for this dress?
Thanks
Victoria
Hi Nicole,
It’s a Talon metal zipper which runs from right below the armpit to about hip level on the side. I guess I don’t typically see dresses with side zippers from the 60s but it may be just me.
Here are a few other photos.
Hi all,
I believe this dress is from the 30s but wanted to get a second opinion from the experts. There is a side zipper.
Also, three other questions:
- does this type of embroidery have a special name?
- is this satin or charmeuse?
- what would you call this color?
Thank you
Victoria
Melanie,
Thank you so much for the detailed explanation!!! I understand now how it works. I am afraid it may be for far more advanced sewing skills than mine but I may brave it and see what happens.
Thanks again
Victoria
Thanks Melanie for the advice and for the sewing guide images. I tried darning but I am not good at sewing at all so it looked awful. I think I am going to go with a replacement square. The inside of the bottom hem which is pretty large ~3" has a matching pattern so I was going to cut one from...
Thank you Nicole. I’ll give it a try. I am a bit concerned that the spot is too large (1”x 1”) for this type of repair. Should I put some sort of backing as well to reinforce it?
Hi,
First of all Happy Holidays to all!
I got this 60s shift dress which I absolutely love. It was a bit dirty but otherwise in great condition so I washed it with some gentle soap. When it dried I was so disappointed to find out that there must have been a dry rot spot or something (I did...
Thank you Nicole. I will try that next. I have a whole box of dresses with color run issues so at least I can try salvaging them. I am most bummed about a red Mr Mort dress that had white trim which is now pink :(
Thank you, Lynne. I do not own the dress so unfortunately I can’t take another picture but you are probably right that it’s Madame. The owner of the dress thinks it’s Zafel but I couldn’t find anything under that name either.
Hi all,
I am trying to save this pretty two tone dress that had armpit stains. I soaked just the top white part in Restoration and it cleaned the stains nicely but the back along the zipper appears to have had black so it still bled into the white part. Some of it also bled into the white waist...
