This is redder than I've managed to picture (despite bumping up the saturation). The detail is the best shot of that (by the way, anything you should call a red and tan small dogtooth pattern?)

That's an old Windsmoor label, looks like one they could have started using in the 60s. This jacket has small shoulder pads & is 50% Wool, 50% Polyester - early 70s???

(by the way, this is Windsmoor's 80s label, I think

although there was probably something else in between).

I'm not sure whether to Mall it or throw it into the Ebay ring - any keyword ideas??

Lin

I am guessing by the collar that it might be creeping into the 70s versus the 60s or the 80s, as that is more of a spread collar.

I am glad you show the close up on the label, in fact I would put a scan of the fabric alone without the label around it early in the listing. When i see the jacket alone i think it is brown with yellow criss cross pin stripes...but the scan tells a different tale. And i don't know if i would call it houndstooth...it looks like a very small scale plaid from what i can see in the scan...but i might not be seeing it correctly.

Oh, this would look super with jeans! Great colourway on the plaid too.

I'm with Chris on thinking very early 70s. I would give this a go on Ebay
and then if it doesn't sell put it in your mall shop. Don't undersell this.

Thanks Chris!

Yes, I need to fiddle with the photos more, or reshoot under different light, I think.
Re: the houndstooth - I just thought it had that kind of a jagged jiggle to it. Sort of a houndstooth check. Ish.

hmmm....

Ooh Sue, you think it stands a chance?

It's not quite as short as some of the modern cutaway jackets, but I do think the colour should go down well at the moment.

Brain-too-slow-to-market-jacket...

not everyone is flattered by the cutaways. cutaways work better with higher waisted pants in some cases.

You could do ebay or a more boutique like atmosphere in the mall :)

Lin, I agree with Chris. For any gal with hips or maybe a thicker waist,
the cutaway jackets, um, just don't 'cut it'! :D

I haven't seen that label before, must be a very early one! I thought the jacket was earlier than 70s - so is it 40s/50s influenced??? Very nice, which ever it is!

Really Margaret? 40s influenced perhaps? Actually, the shoulders feel padded when you put it on, but when you squish the material, it only seems to be thickly stiffened, rather than having a separate pad.

I've seen this label before a couple of times, on coats mostly. One of them was a big tweed overcoat that could have been any date, really (but I thought 60s or 70s, at the time).

I've done a write up for this label on the bio update thread - go see, I'm quite proud of it, you'll see why :)

Lin,
This is the type of jacket I lived in while in college in the early-mid 70s. Yes, it is totally 40s inspired, and that was the look I was shooting for.

If you think "retro" is a big deal now, you should have been around in the late 60s, early 70s! I think a lot of it started with movies like Bonnie and Clyde in 1967. And in the early 70s there was a big revival of interest in old movies, and movie stars of the 20s, 30s and 40s, such as Mae West and WC Fields. Nostalgia was BIG!

is this label the same?

jacket also has this

which are both from this jacket i posted about a good while ago (and unsurprisingly still haven't got round to listing as i meant to redo pics with a few brooches in place to liven it up a little!)

i think we were going for late 50's on it - just thought it would be interesting to compare labels! i just read your updated label bio (love the poem!)for windsmoor - i too have yet to find the date windsmoor was established, and got so frustrate with it i nearly rang the headquarters to ask but then promptly forgot all about it until now..

Hi Harriet!
Yup, that's definitely the same label, so perhaps it goes straight through from the 50s-60s-(?70s). 50s was the time when Windsmoor got their worsted from Arked in Bradford (according to a memoir of one of the employees). That's a good idea about brooches - maybe I should reshoot it with one (it's going to take me a while to get this done, I can tell!)

Thanks for the context, Lizzie, I love the idea of the interlocking eras in clothing. I've got a 40s-esque blouse which I suspect is from round about the same time. I love the way the spark comes from film, so often.

Wonder where the name came from? I know it's both a place and an aristocratic title... Perhaps an origin in Lancashire or the Pennines? Who knows...

i'm not sure about the origin of the name - i'd always assumed it was playing on the aristocratic associations to appeal to its target market. but like you say, who knows!

its a lovely jacket, and could do well at auction. i don't know if it even needs a brooch!

what size is it btw??? [reaches for rather thin wallet] i do like a nice bit of houndstooth....

i do like a nice bit of houndstooth....

Haha! me too! I was considering keeping it, but it's a tad big in the bust (the darts give it some space) and waist for me (and possibly also a bit short - I can't work it out, but it just doesn't *quite* fit - drat - even though it looked small on the hanger). So it must be wider than about 35" - perhaps 37 or 38" bust and 30" waist, although I haven't measured it. It's got no vintage size in it, but I guess you'd call it roughly a modern 12-14 (although what most call those these days, is anyone's guess!)

I tell you, my auctions are rotten this week, so you might get lucky.

L

Measure the shoulder seam to shoulder seam measurement to. that could make a difference with someone esp since some of the 70s items were narrower acrossed the shoulder/arm holes.

I did see a 40s jacket where everything was so close except the collar was not exact. I also have seen 70s jacket, especially the 70s creeping into 80s cuspers that people mistake for 40s jackets as well. I bought one that i knew was 70s but was advertised as 40s once, but i knew what i was getting and the price was fair.

Lin, I will have to look, but is that the same maker as the skirt I bought from you?

Yes Chris! I said that they were really good at using nice textiles with good tailoring, didn't I? I'm puzzled by the plainer label in your skirt (still have a pic) - it seems almost to hark back to the oldest label in its simplicity, but I'm positive it's newer.
It could either be late 80s or full on 90s. It's difficult to tell with the style *or* the fabric, because they seem to use very similar ones over the years.

Nowadays, I have to say, Windsmoor doesn't detain me much, because they really have settled on their conservative older market. It's a shame, because it has the potential to be at least a minor 'Jaeger'. But being grouped with Planet and so on in dept stores does seal their fate somewhat.

(Harriet, I'll let you know when it's listed... in February!! :D )
