Labels?

Hello!

I was wondering if there is such a thing as unlabeled Haute Couture?

I recently acquired some lovely things from a gentleman who used to live in Paris. They belonged to his Mother and were stored in a steamer trunk that they used to travel back and forth to the U.S.A. It was the late 1940's and the 1950's.

He told how he used to wait in a Limo with a Chauffeur on Rue De La Paix for what seemed to be hours, while his Mother had her dresses made.

The dress in the front of this picture is made of a heavy flocked satin with a fringed sashed bow. It also has matching shoes.

I would appreciate any information you could give me. If you would like additional information please let me know.

I want to thank-you for your knowledge and time and for providing such a wonderful web-site.

Sincerely,
Kathleen Marinacc

She may have removed the labels to avoid higher customs fees. She also may have had her clothes made by a very high end dressmaker rather than a couture house.

Not that it means anything, but her husband was in the textile business but I think more the commercial end, and they also knew the Coty's of Coty cosmetics because there is a pic with Mr. Forestier with Mr. Coty on one of the ships. I was told that the oldest dress, a black dress with jacket (which you can't really see) was from around 1948. Another black dress does have a label from a Norman Neiwalt Montreal (sp.) -it's upstairs and I may have that wrong.

The black lace item laying behind the front dress is a slip. There is a crochet top and skirt that I imagine she wore with the tweed jacket that is also folded in the back.

Thanks for your help....but has anyone ever heard of unlabeled couture? Did samples have tags? She was a model at some point but not sure if she was for Dior. I read where he employed women of different heights. She was 5'5.
If more pics would help, let me know!
Kathleen
