Possums are cute, and one of the places I stayed in a national park in Australia on my last trip, I could hear them running over the roof of my cabin at night 
. I do see though how they can become a pest in cities though. And I would just would like to add as New Zealand was mentioned too - they were introduced there, they're not native to NZ, and they are a pest there. They take space, resources and food from native animals, and you have to remember that New Zealand has no native predators (any that are there now were introduced as well, and pose a great problem to the native birds), so they thrive of course. Possum fur is also used in combination with merino wool - the resulting wool is incredibly warm. I wore a pair of merino/possum fur gloves all winter, and they're the best, warmest gloves I've ever had.
