hi yall, haven't posted in a while and i'm glad to be back. i need some help on a couple of items. i have several antique or vintage buttons (not sure of the age) that i know nothing about. they have a bar on the back that has a spring like pin in it that slides up and down (maybe some way of attaching to dress/blouse)? owner believes they could have been her mothers (making them 80 years old or so?). anyone know possible age?
also have a belt buckle(?) that is made of bakelite or celluloid? can't smell very good so smell test doesn't work for me. one of the plastic slips that holds the belt is missing off one piece, but i thought they were quite nice. anyone know about possible age or even if it is a belt buckle and the material it is made of?
thank you for all of your help as usual,
julie

You are in luck...

One of our newest memers (igotbuttons) is a button expert.

I am sure she will know right off the bat.

They do look like they are made for french cuffs or a cufflink type of thing rather than a sewn on button to me. I love them!

Celluloid there is a pin test where you heat a pin and then if you poke it and it makes a hole, its celluloid. I was always so nervous to do it though.
For bakelite there is a simicrhome test. To me it "looks" like celluloid, but i am sure a plastics expert will come along and give a more accurate guess

The top rhinestones are blouse studs, most likely 40s or 50s. The great thing was you could move them from blouse front to blouse front. The blouse would have had a small buttonhole on one side and a regular one the other - like a man' s formal shirt.

The sash buckle looks celluloid and with the loop gone, you will have to sell it as displayable. It's Deco in style, so I would say 20s or 30s.

Hello everyone! I just started a new job and I'm falling behind in everything.

Yes, the top picture is for blouse studs and the buckle is still desirable. The National Button Society's Guidelines state that the condition of items in competition are not a factor in deciding winning displays and we DO have competitions for buckles!!

I would say that even though the loop is missing from one part it <might> still fetch a pretty price because it displays peacocks (we like to see stuff like that!)

hope that helps as late as it is!
