Pauline goes vintage shopping, gets stuck in a dress then buys a nice jacket which I need help with

The vintage dealer where I buy some of my clothes from said a while ago that I should come into her shop as dresses "Pauline".
I number of slight strange reason come together which meant that "Pauline" could.
I already knew that she had a very nice dress in a larger size and also a jacket a text message confirmed they wear in stock , so a few hours ago I walked into her small shop wearing a casual outfit , black trousers , and a loose black and while top, red lips stock grey eye shadow, it's been raining all day so not the weather to get really dressed up to the nines.

Her reaction was really nice with a big warm smile and a "WOOW" look at you, then she said you should have worn a dress. again a nice thing to say, the truth is apart from my vintage dress I not got a modern one I comfortable with yet.

I tried on the jacket and It fitted especially pleasing as it is a tailored jacked with a slight nipped in waist. I thought it look good then Carolyn had a look and thought it suited me.

Next came the dress, the measurement seamed to suggested that it would fit and worth a try, I got it over my head, arm in and half way down but not further down or now even up. I had to call Carolyn to help me out of it.
The vintage dealers night mare customer stuck in a dress! and how after relaxing slightly and a few pulls from Carolyn all was well and the dress was fine ( hopefully)

I tried another jacket but not making the same mistake as the dress realize it was too small early on.

Any how I bought this jacket (the skirt is missing but might not fitted anyway) so the price reflected that, Id am really pleased with it and think it could be the start to a new project.

It was a interesting experience all round! Oh yes it's the first time some one said "Pauline" to my face which was nice.

Any info or thoughts on this jacket is welcome, what strikes me as odd is the shade of the button, they old are they original?
I not even sure about the date late 1940's or 50's ?

The detailing at the shoulders shows up better when worn, is not that the same with all fashion when taken off the hanger,

looking againit also has some padding sewn into the shoulder I may help to date it. I sould not say it a full on shoulder pad.
 
I've required help getting "extracted" from vintage dresses, too! At the shows I attend there are communal dressing rooms which is a good thing - everyone helps zip, unzip and if necessary help pull you out of a dress that's too snug!

Nice purchase, Pauline. Please show us the shoulder pads - that will help date the jacket. Most '50's jackets didn't have them. The buttons may be original - they seem to match the lining.

Thank you, it is also nice to know I am not the only one who been "Stuck"
Getting out was not a very lady like affaire for me at least, where was my ladies maid when I needed her.

here is a photo of the shoulder pad Linn, with the sleeve turned inside out, it not very thick you can defiantly feel it, I am not expert in garment construction but it inside the lining.

Hi Pauline! Love the jacket as much as hearing of your latest rite of passage - brava! I think late 40s on the jacket, but I'll wait for the experts to weigh in.
 
It appears to be late 40s to me also. The cut and the label look to be from this era.
Too funny! But I think we all have had that experience at one time.
At least there was a person to help you.
I did this once at my shop by myself and it took a lot of squirming to get back out by myself.
Awaiting a pic of you wearing the new jacket.
 
I'm sure that many of us here can empathize with the embarassing situation of the being stuck in a dress, it happens! I't's so nice to hear that you have found a vintage clothing dealer you are comfortable with. It's a lovely jacket, great color. I'm getting a late 40s feel about it.
 
I agree with late 40's on it too especially with the shoulder pads and that quintessential rayon lining that they always used back then in jackets!

Thank for looking at the jacket ,You all made my year vintage wise by dating this as late 40's as it's a decade which has eluded me up to now, every thing I bought before turned out not to be 40's
The vintage dealer is a great lady and very nice to me, however it's possible that you seen her work on TV as she trained as a makeup artist with the BBC in London specialising in period make up, working on some of the big costume dramas a few years ago before become a vintage dealer.
Lei you side saddle blog is great I will have to read some more of it.
 
i think at the moment I will have to mix the jacket with something modern ( still in the syle of the 40's) other wise I never get a change to wear it. lol, then maybe something original 40's will come it time.
 
Just to add that I too have been stuck in a dress, several times, and had to be gently extricated. Only recently I was scrabbling around in the changing room, half in half out of dress, trying to get my jeans on underneath to spare my blushes, before calling the shop assistant in to help me out.

And a lovely jacket, what a good find.
 
that color should look terrific on you, Pauline! worn with an ivory skirt & blouse, or even black, or grey would look wonderful, and that way you don't have to attempt matching a skirt perfectly.

great new addition to your wardrobe!!
 
I'm going to go against the grain and say '50s for the jacket, as the shawl collar and soft shaping suggest that to me. Early to mid '50s I would say. It's a good buy, especially in a good size and colour. Well done!

At my shop I've had to unpick dresses before when ladies have firmly become stuck. It can be quite traumatic if handled badly so I'm glad that your experience wasn't too bad.

I do like the idea of a ivory Skirt, Blouses I always find hard to wear as I never know if to tuck them into the skirt or not and when I do they pucker up.
I like it how items can be in a date range makes it so more interesting.
 
Really nice jacket- the colour is so pretty.
I actually got myself stuck in a pair of boots eons ago- the zip went up fine but I couldn't move it down for all the money in world. I thought I was going to be stuck buying the boots and having to cut them off but the manager of the store said not to worry as they were probably faulty. He had a go at trying to move the zip too but had no luck so out came a large pair of scissors and the boots were cut off. Luckily this wasn't a vintage store so the boots weren't unique but really, it was quite embarressing!
