We do not have Florell in the Label Resource as yet.

Walter Florell. Custom milliner who rose to his greatest fame in the 1940s and 1950s. Born in Germany, he moved America as a young man and landed a job designing hats at the millinery salon of Lilly Dache' in 1936. In 1939 he left to open his own salon where he was immediately successful. He made hats for famous woman including many Hollywood actresses such as Great Garbo, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Alexis Smith and more. He also designed hats for The Duchess of Windsor. His film millinery design work includes the movies "Easter Parade" and "Sunset Boulevard" and also did work for several Broadway plays. During WWII he volunteered as mechanic for the American war effort here at home. Aside from hats, he branched out into clothing and wigs before closing his salon in 1963. He died at his home in 1986.

From a 1940s hat from my own collection.

Thank you, Barbara.

I am a vintage and antique clothing seller and recently discovered a black fashion designer who was a contemporary of Stephen Burrows by the name of Lester Hayatt. He is credited in this article by Women's Wear Daily as being the instigator of "Fashionable Camouflage" and apparently had several celebrity clients. https://wwd.com/fashion-news/fashio...ity-fashion-black-fashion-history-1234728458/

I have a jacket that he designed and thought you might want to consider adding an entry on him to your label database as black fashion designers from that era are so underrepresented in historical documentation. The jacket belonged to my sister back in the late 1980s / early 1990s (given the size of the shoulder pads and the batwing sleeves, I think she likely acquired it in the 1980s). Attached are pics of both the jacket and the label.

Date of Garment: late 1980s / very early 1990s
Type of Garment: Moto style jacket
Please credit as "Maiden 1969."
Thanks!

Hi @Michelle Schneiter - Please check your inbox - I sent you a PM.

Came across a new to me DVF label yesterday in the kids section! It was on an 80’s dropped waist toddler size dress. Such a cute label, too.

ADDED TO THE LR 11-11-23, THANKS JUSTINE!
