im looking for good information and sources for actaul vintage stuff i know ebays a good source for stuff but other sources would be great to have handy

Welcome Jenna!

The VFG has a custom google search so that you can search traders websites for particular items - you can find it here.

So you can enter your search term, eg 36B, girdle, chiffon petticoat etc...and it will bring up currently listings of items for sale.

Hi,

Just posting to introduce myself, I am not a dealer of vintage clothes, but am certainly hooked and thinking about buying some stock.

My first piece I bought was a red Cojana wool suit which is immaculate, and paid £5.99 for it last month. I am also going to Kerry Taylor's next auction.

I have found a good textiles recycling warehouse near to me which I am going to this week (once the snow clears!) so I guess it won't be long before I have a good selection of stock.

I would appreciate any views about buying at auctions instead of buying on line from wholesalers, as I like to see the garments I purchase. I have found a couple of wholesalers in the UK one in Yorkshire & one in Cornwall (both about 250 miles from Kent where I am based), but I think they will just sell run of the mill items.

I am not looking to specialise in just vintage designer clothes, I tend to buy what I like and go with my instict.

Many thanks.

Hi and Welcome,
Im in the UK too Hertfordshire, there are some great Auctions out there but theres also stiff competition, be prepared for early mornings, long drives, and standing in a saleroom all day to find the thing you really really want to bid on,goes well above your price range, ive been doing that very same thing for many years,
These are some of the better Auctions in the South which have Textile Sales, Kerry Taylors which you mentioned , then Wellers Auctioneers in Surrey,Dukes in Hampshire, and the Coltswolds Auction company in Gloucestershire, they are mainly 2-4 times a year , always a varied lot of Vintage clothing,
But i would also recommend going to some of the Vintage Clothing fairs, Mainly in London, but always worth the drive to try and find that one or five special items.

Thanks for the info! It sounds like quite hard work, but well worth the effort. I will go to the vintage fairs & would have gone to the one on Sunday in London, but we have had a lot of snow. I am on the mailing list for Wellers, and their next auction I think will be in June.

I have always loved antiques and auctions, and there are a few smaller auction houses in Kent that sometimes have a few items of vintage clothing.

Once again thanks for the info, & I will look up the other couple of auctions you mentioned.

Hi Coral -
welcome to the VFG!

It's great that you have a passion for vintage clothing - it's easy to get hooked! But I did want to add a word of caution - this is NOT an easy business to make a living at. Before you jump in with both feet, I suggest dipping your toes in to see if you have what it takes.
It's hard enough for us life-time dealers to make ends meet - and it seems that people have this idea that it's easy to find great items for cheap and then find buyers for them willing to pay handsomely.
This is rarely the case - cultivating a clientele takes a lot of legwork & much, MUCH more time than most new dealers realize.

Anyway -- just wanted to prepare you!
Good luck to you!

Hi, I bought my first vintage Lanvin dress not to long ago and now I am hooked on vintage!! I have a couple of things that I have googled all over the place but can't find out anything about these 2 labels. Where on this board should I post, or is that ok to do? Thanks and look forward to learning even more!!

Welcome Cheryl. We are all hooked on vintage here and love to look at other peoples' finds. There are different topics for threads and one of them is the "Public Vintage Fashion Q and A." Ideally this is where you would post - and bring it on! Also the "search" function right here at the VFG might be helpful for you.

Hopefully some of our members can help you with their knowledge/experience.
