Hi Sandi, I cant help with who the designer was of your piece, but it looks to have been made to order for the original owner by a seamstress- but not to couture standards , especially the finishing of the darts . I do wonder if the pants were originally lined as well?
That doesn't mean its not...

Hi Phoebe, the use of brown pattern card in the fashion industry has been around for a very long time- I would suggest brown craft card is what was used in the 40s.
I am sure that cross hatch/dot paper is a relatively new development.

Sadly I am not aware of any easy way to fix this- the fraying is significant, and it looks like the sweat has damaged the fabric.
All I can think of is to unpick the back collar and hand sew fabric down to replace the original. Is there anything in the hem or...
Hi, Are you able to please post a close up photo of the frayed area for us? That would help us assist you better.:)
I would not use any fray stop products on the problem area specially if it is silk or acetate- as it can dry hard and also stain some fabrics.
Hi MC, the Vintage Singer machine looks like a beauty, well done for finding it!
I am glad the hat project wasn't all for nothing then, and I hope you can make another band for it.
Happy sewing ! sewingmachineemoti
Gosh I wish your dress could talk! I am guessing a socialite or wife of a diplomat or something like that owed the gown originally in the 50's, or could someone famous has brought it over when the Lord of the Rings films were being filmed in new Zealand and not wanted to take it back home?
