(I originally posted this in '06, but I've since changed my eBay ID to "vintage_u_luv". Here's my updated eBay items link: vintage_u_luv. Thanks!)

Hello to Everyone from San Francisco!

I first heard of VFG from a member who has a vintage store in my neighborhood. She encouraged me to look into joining.

I am so glad to have found my way here.

I have been enthralled by vintage clothing since childhood. Blessed with an eye for and appreciation of rare and unique fashions and designs, I have been collecting vintage items here and there for years. Very recently, I have begun to sell Vintage and Designer items on eBay (I'm vintage_u_luv, on eBay.). I'm having great fun, I am learning more everyday-especially thanks to VFG!- and am making new friends all at the same time. What more could one ask for?

I've had an affinity for things Victorian and from the 20's-30's all of my life. That said, I still appreciate the fine skill and artistry to be found in every era and with countless designers.

Chris, I love your "Must...Have...Platforms...." ... I Live in Platforms! And if I could figure out how to skateboard in them, I would.

I am presently looking into taking my first sewing class, to learn my way around a sewing machine. I've long felt inspired by so many exquisite vintage designs which I've seen- especially those which celebrate the female form... and, as I love to create my own look on a daily basis by mixing and not-matching... It would be a joy to be able to combine both influences and create some new interpretations of fashion.

If you're curious to know more about me ... I sometimes get Lost in Myspace, and can be found here: http://www.myspace.com/sanfrangrrl .

Thank You for making this site and this forum available, especially to those- like me- who are just getting our tootsies damp.

Best Regards!
L.

Hello everyone!

I'm Holly, currently live in WA State but planning to move to FL in about 3 years, and I have two stores over at Main Street Mall, Purse Diva Vintage & Purse Diva Couture. Used to have a store at Ebay for a long time, but finally had had enough over there and moved. Thrilled to be at MS. Anyway, I was directed over here by Viviene (Born Too Late) and am so glad to meet you all! :-)

reference books

Hello, newbie here.....I do have some experience in vintage but my expertise lies in jewelry. However, I'm interested in getting into vintage clothes which I've always had a secondary love for, but definately need some help. I know more about identifying clothes from earlier periods, but have some serious problems with clothes from the 40's, 50's & 60's. Can anyone recommend some books on help in identifying those periods and maybe even later such as the 70's & 80's? You'd think that having lived during the 70's & 80's I'd have some knowledge of it, but have only just recently discovered that I know a lot less than I thought! Help please!!! Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Amy

Hello Amy!

I have the same trouble.. I seem to have blocked out all the stuff I actually wore myself and remember seeing being worn, when you'd think that would be the easiest to identify!

I'm sure there is a thread around here with some recommendations for reading so I'll try and find it but one of the best ways I've found is to pick up old magazines and catalogues. That way you know the year, and get a good feel for what was going on then.

Just one idea - and Welcome! :)

Thanks for both the welcome and the advice. All greatly appreciated. I ordered the book from Amazon and have been hunting down catalogs from the periods of interest. What great advice! Thanks again!!!!!

Hi Newbies ! I'm one too! I logged on for the first time yesterday. I love to sew and collect vintage barkcloth. My vintage clothing collection is from 1900 to 1960's plus accessories. Right now I am gearing up for a vintage wedding exhibit opening in April 2007. My exhibit will be at a museum in New York state. It is so much fun to plan a show because I love to tell the stories of the women who wore these clothes.

Hello!
My name is Nicole. I'm an American/Brit living in Mallorca. In another life I was a journalist and diplomat, but now I'd like to follow the trail blazed by my late grandmother, an antiques dealer in NY, and see if I can make a go at being an antique/vintage clothes and textiles dealer here and on the net. I know a bit about the subject, but every day realise how much more I have to learn, which is what brought me to this site. I'm especially interested in early 20th century through the twenties' fashion, and would also like to mine the treasure that is Spanish fashion of that period and up until the Civil War. Interest in vintage clothing is just awakening here, and I hope to ride this wave!

Hello Nicole!
I hope it's sunny over there :) Welcome along! I think everyone feels a bit the same: there's so much to learn it can sometimes seem overwhelming, but I think picking a particular area or era that interests you is a great way of furthering your knowledge - I would certainly love to hear what you discover about Spanish fashions (of any era!) as that is something I haven't ever looked into.
I'm still catching up on the British stuff!
