Carnegie are in the label resource, and I think that looks like a slightly later label for them. I think it could be 70s?

(and, Hi!)

Lin

Harriet was thinking 50s on the hat.

I agree with you, Lin on the dress. Would this be the "Carnegie of London/Carnegie Models?" I think the collar/neck details on this one would be very face framing.

I think this one says 'Carnegie of London' too? The others may have come across their dresses too, but these three labels have always struck me as being three successive styles from the same (or roughly the same) firm.

Velvet with Black Plumes? (unless the monitor deceives me and it is not indeed velvet). Looks like high society gal if you ask me.

Lin...i seem to have thought there was of course Hattie Carnegie, and then the other Carnegie who is Carnegie of London and maybe like you say Carnegie Models and they were progressive labels to one another...but i think not much is known accept for the fact that they are "NOT related to hattie Carnegie" and that's about it. ?

Hello everyone. I'm a "closet collector" (pun intended) of vintage (and some newer) lingerie among other types of vintage linens/clothing, etc.

I've discovered that it might be time to learn a little something about my items. Well, more than just how much I like to look at them because I'm running out of room and need to make space.

This forum was suggested to me from a kindly person at an eBay forum last night so I joined and cruised around and I'm already learning a lot about tags/labels and dating.

I think that I've got some pretty nice pieces and I hope that I can learn enough to describe them properly for a possible future sale. (I already messed up accordian lace and crystal pleated lace...LOL)

Thanks in advance for all the assistance I'm sure that I'll get from you folks!!

Patti

Hi, Sue!

I'm so excited by what I'm learning today that I'm going back to the thrift store that I was at yesterday to pick up what I didn't have the money to get! Darn stores that only take cash! LOL

I have a question for everyone: What is BOHO and what is NOS? I "think" BOHO is Bohemian?

Oh, and since I'll be at the thrift store is anyone looking for anything in particular? Or do you have some tips for me?

Thanks for the help!!

Patti

Hi Patti, and welcome!

BOHO is indeed short for Bohemian. NOS stands for new, old stock which means a vintage dress that was never worn and still has the original tags attached.

Have fun at your thrift!

Jody

AH! Now that makes sense! I know what New Old Stock is but had never seen the acronym for it. I'm used to seeing eBay's NWT or MWT (mint with tag).

You guys are learning me stuff already! I can't wait to get some things photographed now.

Which leads me to ANOTHER question! (I'm full of them) Since I don't have a dress form or mannequin nor a significant other or older kids, what is the best way to photograph, say, a long slip to show it off to it's best potential? I can figure out bloomers and bras, I think!

Everyone is so friendly and helpful here! Thanks! Patti

P.S. I hope this guy is drinking coffee, like me! :booze:

Hi Patti and welcome! If you love vintage lingerie, then you'll need to make sure you see the lingerie resource. It is really fantastic, and there is a lot of information there.

The biggest buying advice I can give is "Condition Matters." Especially on newer vintage people want excellent condition.

We have a wanted board and people post on it from time to time when they are looking for something in particular. Just hang aroud here a while and you quickly see the types of things that get us excited. Right now it's Tina Leser and Louella Ballerino! But if you find items with either of those labels, I'd say you are one lucky person!

Lizzie

Hi! WELCOME!!!!!

I have seen some take slips on hangers and then pin out the end of it so you can see the full "sweep" if its full skirted.

What I best suggest though is that you invest in a hanging half round form. They are very inexpensive (they can be had for less than $20 in most cases, and they make a world of difference especially if you don't want to make the money (OR more so SPACE) investment of a full sized mannequin.

It is a small investment, but it has big returns because it really "fills out" the item and one can better visualize what it might look on a person.

The draw back is if you have interesting arms on an item...like bell sleeves on a nightgown or intricate lace work, it doesn't really highlight it because there are no arms, but that's when you get creative and either scan close ups of the details or pin them out.

You might also want to check out the Lingerie resource on this site...more great lingerie stuff there :)
